MILWAUKEE (1/25/14) -- The Titan women's basketball team used a second-half surge to take the lead, but a run by Milwaukee was the difference as the University of Detroit Mercy fell, 81-69, to the Panthers at the Klotsche Center on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Senee Shearer had 21 points to lead all scorers, while sophomore
Tayelor McCalister and freshman
Reyna Montgomery each tied their career-highs with 17 and 11, respectively. McCalister also tied her career-high with eight boards
Detroit (3-16, 0-6 HL) trailed 40-32 two minutes into the second half when the Titans started their comeback attempt. Shearer was instrumental with two baskets and freshman
Minisha Frederick-Childress' layup cut the Milwaukee (6-12, 2-3 HL) lead to just four, 40-36. Later on, a McCalister bucket made it 44-40, but the Panthers went back up by six, 46-40, with 16:08 left.
Shearer then scored six-straight points and two free throws by Montgomery had UDM on an 8-0 spurt to jump out in front, 48-46, with 13:28 left. The Panthers then regrouped to go on a 20-2 charge over the next six minutes to open their largest lead of the game, 66-50, with 7:37 remaining.
The Titans never quit and would cut it to nine, four times in the last four minutes, the last off two field goals from freshman Frederick-Childress to make it 77-68 with 1:58 left, but that was as close as Detroit could get it.
Freshman
Megan Galloway and Ristovski each had five points apiece with Galloway adding six rebounds and Ristovski four. Frederick-Childress tied her season high with seven points and collected five boards and two steals, while sophomore
DaVonna Bradford pitched in three points and four caroms.
UDM made a season-high 25 free throws in 32 attempts (78.1%) and also forced 14 turnovers with six steals.
It was a foul fest in the first half as both teams combined to be whistled 25 times, with Detroit getting nearly half of its points at the line going 14-of-17. Milwaukee scored the game's first five points and eventually took an eight-point lead, 16-8, midway through.
It was then 18-10 with 9:06 left when UDM started chipping away at the deficit scoring five straight. First Bradford had a free throw and then bask-to-back baskets by McCalister and Galloway made it 18-15 with 7:42 left, but the Panthers stopped the Titan run and ran its lead back to nine, 30-21, at the 4:26 mark.
Detroit then hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch and a fast-break layup by McCalister pulled the red, white and blue within four, 34-30, but the Panthers hit a three with less than a minute left to take a 37-30 advantage at the break.
Detroit will end its three-game road swing on Wednesday as the Titans visit Youngstown State with tip-off slated for 7:05 p.m. UDM will then return home to battle Green Bay on Pink Day next Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2:00 p.m., inside historic Calihan Hall. For Ticket information,
