DAYTON, Ohio (1/5/14) --
Sophomore Tayelor McCalister had a career-high 17 points and the Titans limited the Horizon League leading scorer Kim Demmings to just 12 points on 5-of-19 shooting in an 82-57 setback at Wright State on Sunday. The contest was the HL opener for both schools and it was moved up two hours due to the snowstorm in the Midwest.

McCalister finished 6-of-14 with seven rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. Senior Megan Hatter had eight points and six rebounds, while freshman Haleigh Ristovski had six points and a season-best 10 boards. Sophomore DaVonna Bradford added six points and eight rebounds and freshman Reyna Montgomery tallied seven points, four caroms, two assists, and two steals.

The Titans (3-11, 0-1 HL) began the game keeping pace with Wright State (12-4, 1-0 HL) as Bradford had an old fashioned three-point play and Hatter knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to knot the score at 9-9 nearly four minutes in, but the Raiders then went on a 9-0 run.

Detroit responded with back-to-back baskets by McCalister and senior Senee Shearer to pull within five, 18-13, but a 16-4 spurt by WSU put the Titans down 17, 34-17, with 6:21 left in the first half.  The Raiders would run their advantage to as many as 22, 45-23, but a three by Wilcox made it a 47-30 game at the half.

The first half did see the first collegiate basketball appearance for senior Abby McCollum as she became the first female athlete since Laura Gignac (1999-03) to play in three sports for UDM as Gignac saw action for the Titan softball, track and cross country teams. McCollum – who had one point and a rebound in seven minutes - played four years of varsity soccer as well as five games in 2011 with the women's lacrosse team.

UDM just did not have enough firepower to make a run in the second period as Wright State opened the stanza with a 13-3 run and would lead by as many as 29 in the game.

Junior Brie Wilcox grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and had three points and two blocks in her first collegiate start, while freshman Lizzie Connors ended with three points and three boards. Shearer ended the contest with six points, ending a school record of eight-straight games with 20 or more points.

UDM came away with a season-high 50 rebounds and held WSU to 33.3% shooting (28-of-54), including 12-of-41 (29.3%) from behind the arc. The 50 rebounds were the most by the Titans since collecting 51 against Milwaukee last season.

The Titans return home for another three-game home stand starting with Cleveland State on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 7:00 p.m. Homecoming will be on Saturday, Jan. 11, against Oakland at 2:00 p.m., with UIC in town on Jan. 16.

Game Notes:
Detroit still leads the all-time series, 25-19… UDM eliminated Wright State from the conference tournament in each of the last two years… Detroit moved to 14-14 all-time in Horizon League openers and 13-15 in conference road openers… This was the second-straight year that the Titans played in the first HL game of the year as they were on the road at Green Bay last season… Shearer did not hit a three for the first time in 16 games dating back to the last season against Belmont in the first round of the WBI, and she came into today leading the nation with 3.92 three-point field goals per game… Shearer is just 57 points away from becoming the 19th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points… Ellisha Crosby did not play for the second game in a row due to a leg injury… The Titans have now used nine different starting line-ups in their first 14 games as junior Brie Wilcox made her first collegiate start… McCalister's previous career high was 14 against Michigan, while Ristovski's career high in boards was eight also versus the Wolverines.
