The Titans (8-8-1, 5-3 Horizon League) finished the regular season as the runner-up in the Horizon League for the third time in the past four seasons. Detroit is the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championships, which are set to start on Tuesday at campus sites. With the No. 2 seed, UDM has a bye in the quarterfinals and will automatically advance to the semifinals, hosted by Valparaiso on Thursday, Nov. 6.
The Titans honored their four seniors --
Haley Burtraw,
Alyssa Riley,
Victoria Sollestre and
Abbey Troy -- prior to the contest. The quartet have combined for 193 starts for the red, white and blue, while Detroit recorded 40 victories, 37 shutouts and a 25-5-1 mark at Titan Field during their careers in the Motor City.
Detroit scored its goal early in the second half as junior
Jennifer Borawski (Northville, Mich. / Northville) notched her second of the season. Borawski, who was carried off the field in the first half after a hard foul, dribbled past two defenders into the right side of the box, avoided the charging goalkeeper and knocked a shot into the back of the net.
Borawski's goal knotted the game at 1-1 in the 49th minute. Detroit had another strong look on goal in the 63rd minute as senior midfielder
Alyssa Riley (Whitby, Ont. / Father Leo J. Austin) corralled the ball in the box, found an opening and got a strong shot off, but Milwaukee goalkeeper Paige Lincicum made the save.
Milwaukee would pull ahead in the 65th minute when the Panthers scored off a rebound. Milwaukee added another goal in the 83rd minute of the match.
Riley led the Titans with three shots. All three of Detroit's corner kick opportunities in the game came in the second half. The Titans also had five of their eight shots in the second half.
Detroit will await to see who wins the Horizon League quarterfinal matchups on Tuesday before playing in either the 5:30 p.m. or 8 p.m. semifinal game in the 2014 Horizon League Championships. The appearance in the semifinals marks the fifth straight year that Detroit has advanced to the final four of the tournament.
