DETROIT (11/1/14) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team tipped off its exhibition season with an impressive 84-49 win over Siena Heights on Saturday at historic Calihan Hall.
Junior guard
Anton Wilson led the Titans with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-9 from downtown, while senior forward
Juwan Howard Jr. pitched in 16 points to go along with eight rebounds. Both senior
Brandan Kearney and sophomore
Jarod Williams scored nine points, while freshman
Paris Bass added eight points to go along with eight rebounds. Junior guard
Carlton Brundidge recorded a game-high seven assists.
The Titans opened the game with a 10-3 run in the first four minutes of action, before the Saints responded with five-straight points to make the score 10-8 during the first media timeout. Detroit then put together an 8-2 run, including a three-pointer from Wilson to build a 18-10 lead with just under 12 minutes left in the opening stanza. Siena Heights closed the gap to four, 21-17, with 8:14 remaining, before the Titans closed the half with a 17-6 run to take a 38-23 lead into the locker room.
Wilson led the Titans with 10 points, while Howard added eight at the break. Detroit committed 12 turnovers in the first half, but only allowed seven points to be scored off them due to good transition defense.
Detroit opened the second half with a 28-6 run including eight-straight points from Wilson to give the Titans a 66-29 lead with 12 minutes remaining. Following the media timeout Bass got the crowd excited finishing off an alley-oop off a nice feed from Wilson. Wilson then added his own dunk into the mix, before Howard got into the action with a three-pointer to give Detroit its largest lead of the game 77-35 with 6:11 left.
Detroit shot 47.3 percent (35-of-74) overall, including 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from downtown, while holding Siena Heights to just 27.9 percent (17-of-61) overall. The Titans defense also forced 22 turnovers and recorded 14 steals and five blocked shots, while dishing out 17 assists.
Detroit will conclude its exhibition season when it hosts Marygrove on Saturday, Nov. 8. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., following the women's exhibition game against Salem International at 12 p.m. at Calihan Hall. Live stats will be available on the
