Game HighlightsPostgame Press ConferenceDETROIT (11/16/2014) --Â Eleven Titans scored and the defense shined as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team clobbered visiting Marygrove College, 88-46, in its home opener on Sunday at historic Calihan Hall.
Â
The 42-point winning margin was the most by the Titans since the 2010-11 season, while the 46 points allowed was the fewest since beating Youngstown State at home, 62-48, during the 2012-13 campaign.
Â
Freshman
Darianne Seward led five players in double figures with 15 points, while also registering six rebounds and tying for the team lead with five assists. Sophomore
Haleigh Ristovski netted 15 points with five boards, three steals and tied her career high with five assists and three blocks, and sophomore
Minisha Frederick-Childress added 11 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.
Â
The Titan defense limited Marygrove to just 25.0% shooting (16-of-64), while controlling the glass, 58-30, and causing 20 turnovers.
Â
Detroit took the lead from the very start and never looked back going on a 20-3 run in the first six minutes of the game. Detroit connected on eight of its 12 shots and held Marygrove to just 1-of-10 with four turnovers in that span.
Â
Ristovski began things with a three and then Reynolds got inside for two. After a Marygrove three, UDM scored 15 points to take a commanding double-digit lead, 20-3. Sophomore
Nicole Urbanick and Ristovski each had four points apiece in that spurt, while redshirt sophomore
Rosanna Reynolds connected from long range.
Â
Marygrove would trim the lead to 10, 26-16, at the 9:19 mark, but Detroit than ran off eight-straight points to end any dream of a comeback. Senior
Ellisha Crosby had two baskets in that stretch and a pair of free throws from freshmen
Chea Taylor and Seward was the catalyst for that charge and a 34-16 lead.
Â
Detroit would keep the 18-point advantage heading into the half up, 44-26, as nine players totaled points in the first stanza. UDM held Marygrove to just 29.4% (10-of-34) shooting, while also outrebounded the Mustangs, 31-16.Â
Â
The Titans kept their foot on the pedal in the second half especially with their stifling defensive performance. Detroit scored nine-straight points for a 55-31 lead and then increased it to 28, 68-40, with a 6-0 spurt with nine minutes left.
Â
Detroit continued to pour it on running its advantage into the 40's and shooting over 50.0% in the second half.
Â
Urbanick finished with 10 points and six rebounds and junior
Lariah Stevens netted 10 to go with four rebounds and a pair of helpers. Reynolds recorded nine points, three assists and two steals and Crosby ended with a solid all-around game at eight points, a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Â
As a team, UDM shot 45.3% (29-of-54), including 53.8% (14-of-26) in the second half. Detroit also visited the free throw line 33 times, sinking 26, and had 22 assists and 10 steals.
Â
Detroit will have a few days off before a busy end of the week as the Titans visit Ohio on Thursday before returning home to face St. Bonaventure on Saturday. That game is part of a Titan doubleheader with the women's game at 12:30 p.m., and the men's contest versus South Alabama at 3:00 p.m. ESPN3 and Comcast 900 will have the coverage for both games.
