TOLEDO, Ohio (12/13/2014) -- Senior
Ellisha Crosby recorded her first double-double of the season, but a late push by Southeast Missouri was the difference as the Titans fell to the Redhawks, 61-51, on Saturday in the first game of the Glass City Classic. The event is being hosted by Toledo at Savage Arena.
Crosby had 13 points and a season-high 10 rebounds along with four assists. It was her sixth career-double-double in just her 20th career Division I game.
Redshirt sophomore
Rosanna Reynolds and freshman
Darianne Seward each had nine points apiece, while sophomore
Haleigh Ristovski grabbed 10 rebounds.
Detroit (3-5) jumped out to a 6-2 lead three minutes in as the defense forced Southeast Missouri (5-5) into 1-of-5 shooting at the start. The Redhawks would come right back with a 9-1 run to take an 11-7 lead at the 12:59 mark.
UDM scored four in a row to knot it up as Crosby hit a free throw and Reynolds nailed a three, but Southeast Missouri ran its advantage to six, 21-15, with 6:28 left.
The Redhawks led, 25-20, with 3:24 remaining when the Titans ended the half on an 8-0 spurt. Crosby was the catalyst in that charge scoring six of the eight points – with freshman
Nicole Urbanick adding the other basket – as Detroit took a 28-25 lead at the break.
Detroit scored the first basket in the second half for a five-point lead and would then open its largest advantage of the game at seven, 34-27, as Seward got inside for a layup off a great pass by Crosby with 17:16 on the clock.
Southeast Missouri erased that with seven-straight points in the next four minutes to tie the game at 34-34. The game was tied at 36-all when the Titans made another strong offensive push for a 44-38 lead with 9:01 remaining with the final three points coming from behind the arc as Urbanick connected from long range.
Once again, the Redhawks tied it up with six unanswered, but Seward ended that with a jumper to give the red, white and blue a 46-44 lead with 7:28 left. After a three by Southeast Missouri, sophomore
Minisha Frederick-Childress started a fast-break opportunity with a rebound and then laid it in for a 48-47 score, but the Redhawks ended the contest on a 13-4 run over the final 5:27 to earn the win.
Frederick-Childress finished with six points, tied her season-high with seven rebounds and added a season-best five assists. Seward had five rebounds and Reynolds collected four, while Ristovski tallied two blocks and two steals.
Detroit held Southeast Missouri to 33.3 percent shooting (24-of-72), including 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from behind the arc.
The Titans will end the Glass City Classic tomorrow as Detroit faces tournament host Toledo at 2:30 p.m.
Game Notes:This was the first career meeting between the two schools… Crosby had five double-doubles in her 12 games last season… Frederick-Childress grabbed seven rebounds for the second-straight game… The five assists by Frederick-Childress were the most since she had a career-high seven at Oakland last season… Ristovski has now pulled down double-digit rebounds in three-straight games… This is the second year in a row that Detroit is playing a tournament hosted by Toledo as it was in the Toledo Invite last December.
