TOLEDO, Ohio (12/14/2014) -- Redshirt sophomore
Rosanna Reynolds had a game-high 26 points, senior
Ellisha Crosby poured in a season-high 24 and the Titans broke a school record with 15 3-pointers as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team charged past the Toledo Rockets, 83-72, on Sunday in the final game of the Glass City Classic at Savage Arena.
Reynolds was named to the All-Tournament Team as she tied her career best with seven 3-pointers and also had nine rebounds and two assists, while Crosby was named the Glass City Classic Tournament MVP following up her double-double yesterday with 24 points, eight rebounds and two assists on Sunday. The win was also number 93 for head coach
Autumn Rademacher '97 as she is now tied for the school record in victories with her coach at Detroit Fred Procter (93, 1990-96).
Detroit (4-5) set a UDM record with the 15 treys, breaking the mark of 13 UDM had at Butler on Jan. 30, 1999. Detroit was 12-of-21 in the first half alone from three-point territory and ended the game 15-of-32.
The Titan defense held Toledo (4-4) to just 32.5 percent shooting (26-of-80), and 11-of-40 from the outside, as Detroit ended a four-game slide in the series. It was also the first win on the road against the Rockets since 2003.
Right from the opening tip, Detroit gave a preview of what was to come as Crosby nailed the first of her five from downtown and the Titans would never trail the rest of the way. Detroit led 5-0 as she hit her next jumper and would eventually take a 21-8 lead at the 11:32 mark. During that spurt, Reynolds and Crosby each had two apiece from beyond the arc.
Toledo was able to cut the Titan advantage to seven, 21-14, with six-straight points, but Reynolds then tallied back-to-back threes to regain a double-digit lead, 27-14, with 8:43 remaining. The Rockets would cut it to seven again, 32-25, with 5:20 left in the half, but the Titans throttled Toledo the rest of the period, ending the stanza on a 16-2 run.
Freshman
Darianne Seward started the spurt as she tickled the twine from three and Crosby followed with another trey the next time down the court to make it 38-25. After a Toledo basket, sophomore
Haleigh Ristovski nailed a three and then made a layup off a great pass from sophomore
Minisha Frederick-Childress. Crosby continued the hot shooting with another from behind the arc and then off an offensive rebound, Seward was able to corral the board and lay it in as time expired for a 48-27 lead at the break.
The run continued in the second half as Reynolds drained another trey and the Titans had their largest lead of the day 24 points, 51-27, with 19:01 left in the game.
From there, Toledo slowly chipped away, getting within 13 points twice, 55-42 and 58-45, midway through the period, but both times, Reynolds was able to cool off the Rockets' charge by connecting from behind the arc, and in the process, tie her own career best with seven treys and giving UDM its record 14 and 15 in that sequence.
The home team kept pecking away and made it a seven-point game at 68-61 with two minutes left, but the Titans sealed the victory by going 15-of-18 down the stretch at the line.
Ristovski ended the contest with her third double-double of the season – and third in the past four games – with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while handing out a team-high five assists. Seward finished with 14 points, four boards, three assists and three steals, while Frederick-Childress posted two points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Titans will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 18, as UDM hosts Delaware State on Dick Vitale Court inside historic Calihan Hall. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
