DETROIT (12/18/2014) -- Redshirt sophomore Rosanna Reynolds led three Titans in double figures with a game-high 22 points and head coach Autumn Rademacher '97 made some history at her alma mater as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dominated Delaware State, 74-52, on Thursday evening at Calihan Hall.
The win was No. 94 in Coach Rademacher's career as she now has the most victories in Titan history. Coach Rademacher played for the Titans from 1993-97 and is third in school history with 1,686 points. She earned MCC First Team honors in 1996 and again in 1997, and was a Second-Team, as well as an All-Newcomer Team honoree as a freshman in 1994. She also ranks fourth in career assists (439) and second in career 3-point field goals (201). She helped lead the Titans to a Horizon League postseason championship and a berth in the 1997 NCAA Tournament as a senior.
As a coach, she has led Detroit to a pair of 20-win seasons, a trip to the 2012 Horizon League Championship and WNIT - the first postseason action for UDM since 1997 – as well as the school's first postseason title since 1981 when the Titans won the WBI in 2013.
The win evened Detroit's record to 5-5 on the season as the Titans won for the fourth time in their last five games, while Delaware State dropped to 1-9 on the year.
Reynolds ended the game with 22 points – 16 in the second half – on 7-of-11 shooting and 7-of-7 at the free-throw line. Freshman Darianne Seward netted 16 points with five rebounds, four assists and two steals, while senior Ellisha Crosby had 12 points and a game and career-high six assists.
The Titans trailed briefly, 4-2, early on, but 14-3 run by the red, white and blue gave the home team a lead it would never relinquish. A basket by Reynolds and four-straight points from Seward started the spurt. Crosby then matched a three by DSU and after two free throws by Reynolds, freshman Nicole Urbanick was able to nail one from long range for a 16-7 lead at the 12:41 mark.
Detroit would eventually push its advantage to double digits, 20-9, as junior DaVonna Bradford got to the rim for a layup. Delaware State cut it to seven a few times, but a steal and a layup by freshman Chea Taylor made it 28-17 with five minutes left in the half and the Titans would go into the locker room up by 18, 38-20.
The Titan defense forced 13 turnovers in the period and held the Hornets to 36 percent shooting (9-of-25).
Detroit kept the pressure up in the second half as a bucket by sophomore Haleigh Ristovski gave the Titans a 20-point advantage, 40-20, 10 seconds into the stanza. UDM would up its margin to as many as 24, 62-38, on another Ristovski basket with 12:13 remaining in the game.
Detroit cruised the rest of the way never letting the lead go below 20 in recording its fourth double-digit victory of the season.
Ristovski finished with six points and eight rebounds and Bradford tallied five points and five boards.
UDM shot nearly 50 percent from the field hitting 49.1 percent (27-of-55) and handed out 19 assists. The defense ended with nine steals and forced 18 turnovers in holding the Hornets to 37.5 percent from the field and just 1-of-15 from three.
The Titans will be right back in action on Saturday as Detroit hosts in-state rival Western Michigan. Game time is set for Noon and it will be Alumni Day at Calihan Hall with the Titans retiring No. 44 in honor of former standout and All-American Cheryl Williams prior to the start of the contest.
