DETROIT (12/20/2014) --
Playing shorthanded in its last home game of 2014, the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team fell to Western Michigan, 71-57, on Saturday afternoon in historic Calihan Hall.

Prior to the game, Detroit retired No. 44 in honor of former standout and All-American Cheryl Williams-Miller and at halftime, the Titans recognized all their former players on Alumni Day.

Freshman Darianne Seward led the way with a season-tying 19 points and a season best eight eight rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Rosanna Reynolds tallied 13 points and sophomore Haleigh Ristovski and freshman Brianne Cohen added six points apiece.

Detroit (5-6) trailed right from the start as Western Michigan (6-3) scored the first five points of the game, but a jumper from Reynolds and a three-point play by Seward tied it all up nearly four minutes in. WMU climbed back on top after a three, but once again, the Titans charged back as two free throws from sophomore Minisha Frederick-Childress and a bucket by Seward gave UDM a 9-8 lead at the 14:16 mark.

WMU then went on a 9-0 run to jump out in front, 17-9, and would push its lead to double-digits, 22-12, with 9:10 remaining. Detroit later went on a 6-0 spurt to trim the deficit to just three, 26-23, as Seward and freshmen Brianne Cohen and Chea Taylor each had a layup, but the Broncos would regain a 10-point lead and head into the locker room up, 35-26.

The Titans trailed by 13 in the second half, 42-29, but cut that down to just seven, 44-37, with 11:08 left. Seward started that with four-straight points and after a basket by WMU, Cohen and Reynolds got inside for layups.

The Broncos extended the lead again to double digits and by as many as 15, 58-43, but Detroit had one more run left in it with an 8-0 spurt. Sophomore Lizzy Connors started that with a trey and then Seward nailed two free throws before Reynolds connected from long range to make the score 58-51 with 3:39 on the clock. That was as close as UDM would get with Western Michigan hitting free throws down the stretch.

Ristovski and Reynolds also had five rebounds and two assists. Cohen grabbed four boards and Taylor collected five caroms with three points.

Detroit shot 30.5 percent from the field and 85.0 percent at the free-throw line (17-of-20). The Titans also outrebounded the Broncos, 41-34.

Detroit will get one more game in before Christmas break as the Titans travel to Cincinnati on Tuesday, Dec. 23, for a Noon tip against the Bearcats.

Game Notes:
Detroit now trails the all-time series, 15-14, including 5-1 with Cheryl Williams-Miller in the line-up from 1979-82…  No. 44 is also retired on the men's side for Terry Tyler… Reynolds has hit at least one three in all 11 games… Seward also had 19 points at Michigan in the season opener… Detroit had used the same starting line-up through its first 10 games… Head coach Autumn Rademacher '97 was an assistant coach for seven years (1997-04) at WMU immediately following her playing career at Detroit… Seward was in double figures for the eighth time this season…
