DETROIT (2/1/2014) --
Senior Senee Shearer drained six 3-pointers and sophomore Tayelor McCalister netted a career-high 24 points, but a strong start by Green Bay in the second half was too much to overcome as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team lost to the Phoenix, 84-72, on Saturday afternoon in historic Calihan Hall.

Shearer ended with 20 points and tied her career high with seven rebounds as well as a milestone passing head coach Autumn Rademacher for second place in school history with 202 career triples, just 15 away from Michelle James' school record 217.

Along with her career high in points, McCalister also grabbed a career-best nine rebounds and handed out four assists coming off the bench.

The Titans saw Green Bay (12-7, 5-2 HL) jump out to an early 8-2 lead and the Phoenix extended that to 19-6 at the 13:11 mark in the first. Detroit (3-18, 0-8 HL) then made its initial run to pull within four, 22-18, as Shearer nailed three 3-pointers during the 12-3 spurt.

Green Bay was able to hold off that Titan charge, but back-to-back layups by McCalister made it a one-possession game, 30-27, with 5:09 left in the half. Another jumper by McCalister trimmed the deficit to three once again, 32-29, as the red, white and blue went into the half trialing 36-31.

Both teams hit five 3-pointers in the first half, although all of Detroit's came off the hand of Shearer.

UDM and Green Bay then traded baskets to start the second half as freshman Megan Galloway took a pass from rookie Reyna Montgomery and laid it in to make it 38-33, but a 10-0 Phoenix run pushed it to a 15-point advantage, 48-33, with 16:29 left.

The Titans countered with six-straight points as freshmen Minisha Frederick-Childress and Haleigh Ristovski had back-to-back baskets and two free throws from McCalister cut it to 48-39, at the 13:46 mark.

That was as close as the Titans could get to as the Phoenix raised its lead to as many as 25 before a late UDM run made it a 12-point contest.

Montgomery finished with eight points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals and Ristovski added eight points, seven boards, and tied her season high with five assists.

Detroit shot 42.6% in the game with nine 3-pointers, while the Phoenix was at 42.2%, hitting 11 from downtown. The Titans forced 11 turnovers with five steals and were just outrebounded, 39-37.

The Titans will have a week off before their next action as UDM hosts Milwaukee next Saturday, Feb. 8, in a Play 4Kay Pink Game on Dick Vitale Court. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
