ROCHESTER, Mich. (2/13/2014) -- Freshman
Megan Galloway led four Titans in double figures with a career-high 21 points, but two Oakland runs in the second half was the game as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team fell, 97-78, on the road at the O'Rena on Thursday night.
Galloway was 10-of-20 from the field and had 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Senior
Senee Shearer had 17 points, while sophomore
Tayelor McCalister and freshman
Minisha Frederick-Childress added 17 and 10, respectively.
It was up and down from the start, but both teams had some trouble getting the offense going early as Detroit was 2-of-14 and Oakland 4-of-13 with the Golden Grizzlies taking a 13-5 lead eight minutes into the game.
Both teams then started to make some shots, but a couple of 3-pointers by OU had Detroit down, 25-15, with eight minutes remaining in the opening period. The Titans were then down by eight, 34-26, at the 5:28 mark when the red, white and blue scored six-straight to make it a one-possession game. Shearer and McCalister had layups and off a team rebound, Galloway was able to take a feed from freshman
Minisha Frederick-Childress and knock it in to make it a 34-32 game with 1:40 left in the half.
The Golden Grizzlies were able to hold off that spurt and regain their eight-point lead, but McCalister's jumper as time was winding down sent UDM into the half down by just four, 40-36.
The Titans were able to hold their own on the boards coming out even in the battle, 24-24, at the half. The defense also forced OU to shoot 3-of-15 from the outside, while Detroit was 14-of-41 overall in the opening stanza.
The second half saw each team come out with some high energy as Oakland pushed its advantage to nine, 47-38, before the Titans – on the strength of Galloway and Frederick-Childress – raced back to make it a three-point deficit, 56-53, as the last score was a trey from Shearer with 14:16 on the clock.
That is when the Golden Grizzlies took charge going on a 12-0 run to open a 68-53 lead midway through the second half. A Galloway layup and a 3-pointer by Shearer brought Detroit within 10, 70-60, but another 12-0 spurt by Oakland made the deficit too much to overcome.
UDM will continue its quick two-game road trip this Saturday as the Titans head to Cleveland State. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m., at the Wolstein Center.
Game Notes:
Detroit still leads the all-time series, 11-8... Frederick-Childress had a career-high seven assists... UDM had four players in double figures for the second-straight game and the third time in its last four...
