DETROIT (10/31/2015) -- All six seniors started and played vital roles Saturday as the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team earned a key 1-0 victory over visiting Milwaukee on Senior Day. It was the third-straight win for the Titans and second-straight shutout.
The Titans (2-1-5 HL) picked up a big three points in the Horizon League standings and moved into fourth place temporarily with three more league matches to be played Saturday night. Detroit has one Horizon League match remaining -- at home Friday against Belmont.
Prior to the match --
Austin Dunn,
Jason Leslie,
Alex Mendonca,
Jacob Prud'homme,
Pat Smith and
Nathan Steinwascher -- were all honored as the senior class for 2015. All six started the match, but it was a trio of underclassmen who got Detroit on the board.
After just entering the game, freshman
Paul Wiedmaier flicked a pass to sophomore
Spiro Pliakos who knifed the defense with a pass and found junior
Tyler Moorman in stride, behind the Milwaukee backline. Moorman beat a charging UWM keeper Agustin Rey to the left corner of the goal in the 60th minute.
The goal for Moorman was his team-leading fifth of the season and first since Sept. 16 at Michigan. The helper for Wiedmaier was his first career point. Pliakos' assist was his team-leading sixth of the 2015 campaign.
Milwaukee kept the offensive pressure on Detroit throughout the match -- firing 10 shots in both halves -- but the UDM defense and senior goalkeeper
Nathan Steinwascher were up to the task. Steinwascher, who entered the match as the Horizon League leader in saves, turned away six shots on goal for his fourth shutout of the season. He moved into a tie for second place all-time in shutouts with his 18th career clean sheet and is one back of the career mark of 19.
The game was physical throughout. Three yellow cards were issued in a span of 1:25 late in the second half. Detroit was whistled for 20 fouls, while Milwaukee was called for 19 fouls during the match, which is tied for the season-high by a Detroit opponent.
Detroit's victory was its first at home this year as well as the first that ended in regulation. The Titans had drew in five of their first six contests at Titan Field in 2015.
