Kendell Motors His Way To 35th At NCAA Great Lakes Regional

MADISON, Wisc. (11/13/2015) --
Sophomore Ben Kendell just missed setting some Titan history, but he did end up beating the Horizon League field with a new career 10k time as the University of Detroit Mercy men's cross country team finished the 2015 season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship.
 
The 10k race was held at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course in Madison, Wisconsin.
 
As a team, Detroit was 22nd with 585 points, fourth among Horizon League programs.
 
Kendell shaved 19 seconds off his career 10k time taking 35th in 31:43, the best time by a HL runner at the GLR. The time was also good for sixth in the Titan record books, while his 35th-place effort is the second highest in school history.
 
Senior Austin Wigent was 128th in 33:21, while senior Derek Gielarowski finished 138th in 33:37.  Sophomore Charlie Felton was just behind that group earning 140th in 33:38 and senior Colin Creagh ended his cross country career in 144th with a time of 33:40.
 
The race was the final of the year for the red, white and blue.

KENDELL'S BIG FINISH
  • Ben Kendell sure knows how to end a season. After recording All-Horizon League First Team honors for the second-straight season, Kendell nearly registered All-Region accolades.
  • His time of 31:34 set a PR by 19 seconds of the 31:53 he ran at last year's NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
  • It was also the sixth best time in school history surpassing his own run for sixth.
  • The 35th-place finish is the second highest in school history behind only Titan Hall-Of-Famer Ken Dubois' finish of 23rd in 1985.
 
GREAT SENIOR CLASS
  • The race was the last in cross country for seniors Colin Creagh, Derek Gielarowski and Ryan Hofsess.
  • All three runners earned All-Horizon League accolades in their career.
  • Creagh was First Team last season claiming runner-up, while Gielarowsk was a two-time Second Team honoree. Hofsess was also First Team All-League in 2013.
  • All three runners were part of the school's first-ever Horizon League Championships in 2013 and 2014.
 
NO. 22 FOR CREAGH
  • Senior Colin Creagh became the 22nd harrier in school history to run in four NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships.
 
TEAM FINISH
  • The Titans were 22nd at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship totaling 585 points, fourth in the HL behind Oakland (303), Youngstown State (434) and Milwaukee (536).
