TULSA, Okla. (11/28/2015) -- Senior
Carlton Brundidge tallied a career-high 23 points to lead four Titans in double figures, but it was just not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell at Oral Roberts, 100-95, on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Chris Jenkins notched his second career double-double with 16 points and a career-tying 13 rebounds. Senior
Anton Wilson posted 19 points with seven rebounds and a team-high four assists and sophomore
Jaleel Hogan netted 15 points in just 15 minutes of action due to foul trouble.
Detroit (2-2) trailed by as many as 16 in the second half, but outscored Oral Roberts (6-1) 17-6 in the final 4:48. A three by Jenkins got Detroit within nine, 98-89, with over two minutes left and then Brundidge followed with a basket.
Two Golden Eagles free throws had them up, 100-91, with under a minute to play, but Wilson nailed a triple and was fouled as he hit the free throw for a four-point play and a 100-95 score with 38 seconds left. ORU – who finished the game 25-of-38 at the line – missed four free throws in that span giving the Titans a chance to get even closer, but they couldn't take advantage.
Brundidge also had five rebounds and two assists and redshirt freshman
Aaron Foster-Smith finished with seven points. Freshman
Gerald Blackshear corralled seven caroms off the bench and scored seven points, and junior
Jarod Williams registered eight points and two helpers.
The Titans outplayed Oral Roberts, 55-20, in the paint and had an edge in second-chance points (23-10) and points off turnovers (18-10).
It was high scoring right from the very start as both teams were hitting shots early and often. With the score tied at 13-all, Oral Roberts went on its first run scoring eight-straight to take a 21-13 advantage.
Detroit would claw back to make it a one-possession game a number of times, including a one-point game, 29-28, with 8:02 on the clock as Blackshear grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in. The Golden Eagles then nailed four free throws in a row to push the lead back to five and went into the half up, 44-40.
The first half score was in large part due to Oral Roberts getting to the line 19 times – converting 12 – and hitting six 3-pointers. The Titans were 3-of-9 from behind the arc and only 1-of-4 at the charity stripe.
In the second half, the fouls and three-point shooting started to take its toll on Detroit as Hogan had to sit with four fouls at the 17-minute mark – when he had 15 points already. Oral Roberts started to extend its lead jumping ahead 60-50, with 16 minutes left.
Wilson had 13 points in the first half to keep Detroit in the game and in the second, it was Brundidge and Jenkins keeping the Titans in it. Brundidge had 17 of his points in the second stanza and Jenkins added 12 in the period. Down 66-55, Brundidge went on a spurt scoring nine of UDM's 11 points, including a layup to cut the deficit to six, 72-66, with 11:20 remaining.
A couple of minutes later, an offensive rebound and dunk by Foster-Smith made it 76-70, but the Golden Eagles responded with back-to-back treys to make it a double-digit game again. They were up by as many as 16, 94-78, with 4:48 remaining, but the red, white and blue showed no quit as it made it a five-point contest in the last 30 seconds.
Detroit will now get ready for No. 17/19 Vanderbilt as the Titans visit the Music City on Wednesday, Dec. 2, in an 8:00 p.m., tip on the SEC Network.
Game Notes:Detroit now trails the all-time series, 10-7… Oral Roberts and Detroit were conference rivals in the Midwestern City Conference (which was renamed the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and the Horizon League in 2001) as ORU was a charter member of the league in 1979 with the Titans joining in 1980… Oral Roberts also used to be called the Titans until 1993… Freshman
Josh McFolley did not play due to an undisclosed injury... The Titans were whistled for 29 fouls and had four players foul out... The last time Detroit allowed 100 points was against Stony Brook, 104-102, in triple overtime while the last time in happened in regular was at #18/19 Connecticut, both in 2013… Jenkins' other double-double was 13 points and 13 rebounds at Northeastern last season… Brundidge's previous career high in points was 22 at James Madison in 2013… With two more assists and no turnovers, Brundidge now has 20 assists on the year and just two turnovers… It was the highest combined score in a Titan game since it lost to Stony Brook, 104-102, in triple overtime in 2013 and the highest combined score in regulation since beating Duquesne, 108-97, in 1989.
