DETROIT (12/19/2015) -- It was another hot shooting day for the Titans as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team raced past UCF, 95-89, on Saturday afternoon for the team's fourth-straight victory.
Detroit also remained undefeated at home at 6-0 and has won nine straight at Calihan Hall dating back to last season. It was Military Appreciation Day at Detroit as UDM honored veterans and active military members.
Four players scored in double figures for the Titans, led by junior
Chris Jenkins' career-high 26 points. He also had 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year along with three steals and two assists. Sophomore
Paris Bass had 23 points, senior
Anton Wilson 13 and freshman
Josh McFolley netted 12.
Detroit (6-3) shot 51.7 percent from the field and hit 12 from long distance as it never trailed in the game. UDM outrebounded UCF – who came into the contest the seventh tallest team in the NCAA – 37-25 and also forced 15 Knights' turnovers.
Detroit used a three-point play by Wilson and a triple by McFolley to open its biggest advantage on the day, 51-36, just two minutes into the second half. UCF (5-4), though, came back as it did all game long and trimmed the Titan lead to just two, 59-57, with 11:58 left, but the red, white and blue never broke going on a 9-0 run to bring the score back to double-digits, 68-57. Jenkins started that with five-straight points and McFolley capitalized it with a 3-pointer.
The Titans would continue to have a double-digit until the Knights went on another charge to get within four, 83-79, with 3:23 remaining. It was also a four-point lead at 87-83 as the Titans continued to answer every UCF comeback attempt, eventually pushing it back to eight, 91-83, with 1:10 left as Bass hit two free throws and Jenkins came away with a layup. Jenkins and Bass would then seal the triumph with free throws down the stretch.
Detroit's defense finished with 10 steals, leading to a 26-10 points off turnover margin. UDM also recorded more blocks (4-3) than the bigger UCF squad and registered 14 assists.
Senior
Carlton Brundidge ended with six points and four caroms and freshman
Gerald Blackshear posted six points, seven rebounds and a steal.
It was a game of runs in the first half as Bass scored the first five points of the game and Detroit took a 15-4 run at the 14:39 mark. A three by junior
Matthew Grant later on would give the Titans a 12-point advantage, 18-6, with 14 minutes on the clock.
The Titans were shooting over 50.0 percent for most of the first half and five of their first nine field goals were from behind the arc.
A 9-0 run by UCF cut it to three, 18-15, but back came the red, white and blue as a triple by McFolley ignited an 11-0 spurt as the Titans soared to a 14-point lead, 29-15, with 7:48 left.
UCF would go on a 13-1 run to make it a one-possession game, 30-28, but Detroit scored seven in a row and ended the first half on a 15-6 run. Brundidge ended that run by bringing the crowd to its feet with a half-court heave that was all net for a 45-34 lead at the break.
The Titans shot 47.1 percent (16-of-34) from the field with nine from behind the arc in that first half and had a 14-2 margin in fast break points to stymie the bigger UCF team.
The Titans will hit the road before Christmas break as UDM visits Western Kentucky on Tuesday, Dec. 22. The game is set for 8:00 p.m. (EST) and will be televised live on Fox College Sports.
