Titans Drop Road Affair At EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. (12/28/2015) -- Freshman Josh McFolley had a team-high 19 points, but it was not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 88-73, at Eastern Michigan on Monday night.

McFolley was 6-of-13 from the field with a season-high five triples. Junior Chris Jenkins tallied 14 points and nine rebounds, while senior Anton Wilson netted 13.

Detroit (6-5) was ahead, 35-33, early in the second half and the game was knotted at 40-40 with 16:21 remaining when Eastern Michigan (8-4) put together a 15-4 run. McFolley ended that with a trey and then a jumper by sophomore Paris Bass pulled UDM within six, 55-49, with 10:08 left.

EMU would push its lead to double digits, the latest at 69-59, when McFolley hit another three. A free throw by redshirt freshman Aaron Foster-Smith cut it to 69-63 and after an EMU basket, McFolley drilled another from distance and the Titans were behind by just five, 71-66, with 3:25 on the clock.

The Eagles though responded with five-straight points and the Titans could not get any closer.

Bass finished with six points, seven rebounds and a team-best four assists. Freshman Gerald Blackshear had five points and a team-high 10 rebounds – which tied his season high - while Foster-Smith ended with five points, a season-tying six boards and two blocks.

Detroit outrebounded EMU, 43-36, and ended the game with six blocks and six steals.

The Titans started the game on fire hitting their first three shots for a 7-0 lead. UDM was also 6-of-9 from the field and built its advantage to nine, 16-7, with 14:38 left in the half as five Titans had baskets by that point.

EMU went on a 9-0 run to tie it before sophomore Jaleel Hogan ended that spurt with a layup. It was then tied at 18-18 and 20-20 when the Titans jumped out in front again courtesy of the old-fashioned three-point play by Jenkins. Back-to-back layups by senior Carlton Brundidge and Detroit had a 27-22 lead with 4:34 remaining in the stanza.

The Eagles came back and would take a one-point lead, 31-30, with under 30 left to play, but a triple by Jenkins to end the half gave the Titans a 33-31 advantage at the break.

Detroit shot 50.0 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes (13-of-26), but was 3-of-10 from behind the arc.

The Titans will now get ready for Horizon League play as the Titans open the conference slate with Youngstown State on Saturday, Jan. 2. It will be a Detroit basketball doubleheader with the women hosting YSU at Noon before the men's game at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes:
Detroit still leads the all-time series, 58-17, but EMU did end a nine-game slide to the Titans… The 75 games against EMU is the fourth-most against any opponent in Titan history behind Loyola (121), Xavier (94) and Marquette (88)… EMU assistant coach Kevin Mondro was a three-year letter winner for Detroit graduating in 1997 and serving as assistant coach from 1998-2008 - including interim head coach for the final 16 games in 2007-08, while assistant coach Benny White was a graduate assistant in 1978-79 and an assistant coach from 1993-95… Detroit had made double-digit 3-pointers in four straight games coming into the contest… Jenkins now has five or more rebounds in six-straight games… Foster-Smith also has six rebounds against UM-Dearborn…
