DETROIT (12/30/2015) -- Sophomore guard
Nicole Urbanick tied a single-game school record by hitting eight 3-pointers Wednesday on her way to scoring a career-high 32 points, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team fell, 85-68, to Eastern Michigan University at historic Calihan Hall. It was the final non-conference game of the year for the Titans.
Urbanick (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Divine Child) sank 6-of-8 triples in the second half and finished the game 8-of-14 from beyond the arc in her career-best performance. Urbanick's eight makes from downtown tied the single-game record held by Daphne Smith, which was set against Butler in 1987.
Urbanick led the charge in the third quarter, scoring 17 points in the frame, as the Titans scored a season-best for a quarter with 30 points in the third stanza.
Detroit struggled to find its stroke early, scoring just eight points in the first quarter. The Titans trailed at the break, 47-21, but came out in the third quarter clicking on all cylinders. Urbanick made five triples in the third quarter, including three of them in the first 1:59 of the period.
The Titans shot 51.6 percent in the second half, highlighted by Urbanick's 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. Junior guard
Rosanna Reynolds (Canton, Mich. / Divine Child) also performed well in the second half for Detroit, scoring 10 of her 13 points in the second 20 minutes. She had five assists in the second half.
Detroit out-scored Eastern Michigan (9-2) in both the third and fourth quarters, but couldn't get close enough for a comeback attempt. The Titans cut the Eastern Michigan lead to 15 points, 77-62, on Urbanick's eighth 3-pointer of the game, while forcing the Eagles into a timeout. It would prove to be the closest Detroit would get in the latter stages of the second half. The loss snapped Detroit's four-game home win streak.
Reynolds finished with 13 points, six assists and three steals for the Titans, while sophomore forward
Brianne Cohen (Toronto, Ont. / York Memorial) tallied nine points and a team-high eight boards off the bench for Detroit.
Haleigh Ristovski and
Lola Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich. / University Liggett) each dished out three assists for the Titans.
Detroit had the edge in points off turnovers, 17-15, including a 10-0 advantage in the final stanza. UDM had the edge in offensive rebounds (10-9), but Eastern Michigan finished with a rebound advantage, 36-32.
The Titans finished the game 15-of-20 from the free throw line, including 9-of-10 in the second half. Reynolds, who entered the game second in the Horizon League in free throw shooting, was 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
Cha Sweeney led the Eagles with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven helpers.
