Brianne Cohen tied her career-high with 19 points on Saturday, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team fell in the final seconds, 72-70, to visiting Youngstown State in their Horizon League opener at Calihan Hall.
Detroit (4-8, 0-1 HL) led by seven points, 57-50, entering the final quarter, but YSU (11-2, 2-0 HL) went on a 15-4 run to open the fourth stanza to take a 65-61 lead. Detroit fought its way back as freshman
Brittney Jackson (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Nazareth) hit a corner triple to pull the Titans to within one point, 65-64, with 2:13 left. Detroit regained the lead, 68-67, with 37 seconds left after
Brianne Cohen (Toronto, Ont. / York Memorial) sank two free throws.
YSU's Indiya Benjamin followed with a 3-pointer to give the Penguins the lead again, but Jackson hit a clutch runner in the lane to tie the contest, 70-70, with nine seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Detroit was called for a foul on the inbounds play giving Youngstown State two free throw shots. YSU's Sarah Cash converted on both with five seconds left.
Detroit had one final look at the basket with 2.8 seconds left, but
Rosanna Reynolds' half-court heave was off-target.
Cohen shot 8-of-13 from the floor for her 19 points. It was her third game this season of scoring 19 points. Jackson and
Haleigh Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich. / University Liggett) each added 11 points for the Titans. Ristovski added team-highs of nine rebounds and six assists. Reynolds posted nine points, five assists and two blocks and hit the 100th 3-pointer of her career early in the third quarter.
The Titans led at halftime, 39-27, behind 12 points by Cohen in the opening 20 minutes. Detroit got out to a 22-17 lead in the first quarter behind three 3-pointers -- two of them by
Haleigh Ristovski. The teams were tied 17-17 late in the frame, but Detroit scored the final five points in the quarter on a triple by
Lola Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich. / University Liggett) and jumper with seven seconds left by
Chea Taylor (Bellbrook, Ohio / Bellbrook).
Detroit led by as many as 14 in the first half. The Titans used a 8-0 run in the middle of the quarter to take a double-digit advantage. Cohen scored six of her 12 first-half points in the second stanza.
For the game, Detroit finished 5-of-5 from the free throw line and shot 9-of-24 from beyond the arc. Detroit shot well in the first half, finishing with a 51.5 percent shooting clip, but went 11-for-33 (33 percent) in the final 20 minutes.
For the game, the Titans shot 42.4 percent. Both teams finished with 34 rebounds, but Detroit had the edge in assists, 16-13, and bench scoring, 30-4. Neither team shot a free throw until the second half of the contest.
Cash led Youngstown State (11-2, 2-0 HL) with 24 points and nine rebounds.

• Detroit finished with 10 turnovers. It marked the fourth game this season that the Titans have recorded 10 or less turnovers.
• Jackson's double digit effort was the third of her career. She tied her career-high with 11 points. She also scored 11 at Western Michigan.
• Reynolds recorded five assists for the seventh time this season.
