DETROIT (12/9/2015) -- Junior
Chris Jenkins recorded his third-career double-double and four Titans scored in double figures as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team outlasted Toledo, 75-72, on Wednesday night inside historic Calihan Hall.
The game began with video tributes to former U-D football standout John Conti and baseball player Reggie Hall as the alums passed away this week.
Jenkins had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Detroit (4-3) in both categories. Freshman
Josh McFolley netted 16 and senior
Anton Wilson and sophomore
Jaleel Hogan finished with 10 apiece.
The Titans nailed 13 from behind the arc and shot over 50.0 percent in the second half and held Toledo (6-3) to under 40.0 percent in the second stanza, including 1-of-8 from three.
Detroit was in front, 67-63, with 3:44 left when Toledo scored four in a row for the 10th tie of the contest. McFolley would give UDM the lead back with a big 3-pointer with under two minutes to go.
Detroit was ahead, 70-68, with 31 seconds left when McFolley went to the free throw line, but he missed the front end of a one-on-one. He made up for it with a huge steal and a layup for a 72-68 lead, and the Titans would fight off the Rockets down the stretch for the victory.
In a game that featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties, the Titans trailed by as many as seven in the first half and five early in the second when they scored 10 in a row to get back in the game. Trailing 41-36 with 16:06 left, UDM's defense came up with three stops and on the offensive end, converted on those opportunities. Hogan had a layup and then Wilson and Jenkins hit trifectas before senior
Carlton Brundidge wrapped up the charge with the basket for a 46-41 advantage with 13:52 left.
The Rockets fought back to reclaim the score and then each team ended up trading the lead over the next 10 minutes until the Titans went up by four.
Detroit finished shooting at 49.1 percent (27-of-55), including 13-of-27 from behind the arc. Junior
Jarod Williams posted eight points, four rebounds and two assists and junior
Matthew Grant netted seven with four boards. Brundidge, McFolley and Wilson all had three assists, and Jenkins had a career-best four blocks.
With emotion filling Calihan Hall, Toledo jumped out in front scoring nine in a row for a 9-2 lead early. Detroit came back with a 16-5 run that was started by a McFolley 3-pointer.
Toledo led, 11-7, when Jenkins and Grant tallied back-to-back treys and another basket by Jenkins gave UDM a 15-11 lead at the 11:55 mark. The Titans would also have a four-point lead on a three by Grant, 18-14, and then 23-19 as freshman
Aaron Foster-Smith nailed a triple and Hogan put in a basket with 7:51 remaining.
Detroit held that until the Rockets went on a 10-0 spurt to go out in front, 31-26 with 2:42 left, and they would eventually take a 34-31 lead at the break.
Both teams knocked down six 3-pointers in the first half and each netted nine points off turnovers.
