SOUTH BEND, Ind. (2/15/2015) -- Senior goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick made 18 saves in net and the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse fought hard throughout, but the Titans fell to No. 11-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon, 17-5.
Detroit had a strong first half and scored the first two goals of the contest. Senior
Annie Mendoza gave Detroit a 1-0 lead at the 21:52 mark of the first half and junior
Michaela Schwartz followed just 39 seconds later to give Detroit a 2-0 lead.
Notre Dame (2-0) would go ahead to take the lead, but twice the Titans would come back to tie. Sophomore
Kelsi Pritchard tallied her second goal of the season to tie the game 3-3 and senior
Tessa Keuler tallied a free position goal to knot the game 4-4 with 7:35 remaining in the first half.
McCormick was big in the first half, making 10 stops in-between the pipes. McCormick had four saves to start the game before allowing a goal. She finished the game with 18 saves overall, one shy of her career high.
Sophomore
Julie Castner added a second-half goal for the Titans, her second of the season. For the second straight game, freshman
Jordyn Beam assisted on a goal for the Titans, while Keuler also added an assist.
Mendoza led the Titans with three draw controls during the contest, while McCormick added a team-high five ground balls. Junior
Kylie Birney added three ground balls and two draw controls. Castner led the squad with four shots.
Notre Dame had 42 total shots in the contest, while Detroit tallied 18 shots. Detroit was 8-of-9 in the first half in clears and 13-of-17 overall for the contest.
The Titans (0-2) return to the field Friday, Feb. 20 for a 2 p.m. home contest against Cincinnati at Ultimate Soccer Arenas.
