PONTIAC, Mich. (2/20/2015) --
The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back on its way to a 17-8 victory over visiting Cincinnati in the 2015 home opener for the Titans at Ultimate Soccer Arenas.

It was the first victory of the season for Detroit (1-2), after the Titans had faced two ranked opponents on the road to start the regular season. It's the second victory over Cincinnati in the past four years.

Junior Kylie Birney scored a career-high five goals to lead the Titans. Senior Tessa Keuler broke her own school record by recording six assists during the game. Three more Titans scored three goals each. Sophomore Kelsi Pritchard tallied three goals, all on free position attempts. Senior Annie Mendoza and junior Michaela Schwartz also scored three goals each for the Titans.

Detroit started off strong offensively during the contest, scoring the first five goals of the game and leading 5-0 at the 19:15 mark of the first half. Six different Titans scored in the first half to give UDM a 9-4 lead at halftime.

Birney scored her third goal of the game three minutes into the second half to give Detroit a 10-4 advantage. Cincinnati pulled to within five, 11-6, but Detroit didn't allow a goal for the next 22 minutes of the game, while scoring six goals in that span to take a 17-6 lead and clinch the victory.

Freshman Jordyn Beam tallied her first career goal off a free position attempt in the first half. Sophomore Julie Castner added two goals for the Titans, while also leading the team with six draw controls.

Freshman Lauren Webley led the team with three caused turnovers and also had a team-high tying three ground balls. Keuler also had three ground balls, while Mendoza finished with five draw controls for the Titans. Senior goalkeeper Lexie McCormick made seven saves in net for the win.

Detroit had the advantage in shots for the contest, 31-17. Detroit was also 13-of-15 on clear attempts.

The Titans play their next five games on the road, starting with a trip to California during the first week of March for two games. Detroit plays at UC-Davis on March 2 and St. Mary's on March 4.
