DAVIS, Calif. (3/2/2015) -- Seniors
Tessa Keuler and
Annie Mendoza each scored three goals and Detroit scored three-straight second half goals to pull to within one, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team's comeback attempt fell just short as the Titans fell 13-10 at UC Davis on Monday night.
Detroit (1-3) was playing in its first of two games in California. It was the home opener for UC Davis, which improved to 1-2 with the victory.
The Titans started the game strong, scoring the first three goals of the game. Keuler scored just two minutes into the game and Mendoza added two straight goals to give Detroit a 3-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest. Detroit would lead 4-1 at the midway point of the first half as sophomore
Julie Castner scored off an assist from
Michaela Schwartz.
UC Davis scored five of the final six goals of the half as the Titans trailed 6-5 at the break. Senior goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick made six saves in the first half for the Titans.
The Aggies continued their run early in the second half and ultimately lead 11-7 at the 14:10 mark of the second half.
That's when Detroit would go on a pivotal run, scoring three straight goals and holding the Aggies off the scoreboard. Mendoza scored her third goal of the game and seventh of the season at 15:08 and Keuler also tallied a hat trick, scoring her fifth goal of the year at the 17:42 mark. Neither team scored for the next seven minutes until Castner was granted a free position opportunity on an open goal after a foul. Castner converted to pull Detroit to within one goal, 11-10, with 5:15 remaining in the game.
UC Davis closed out the game by scoring two goals in the final minute to clinch the victory.
Sophomore
Kelsi Pritchard scored two second-half goals for the Titans, while Castner also finished the game with two goals, giving the Titans four players with multiple goals. Pritchard and junior defender
Ally Shrader tied for game-highs with five ground balls each. Junior
Kylie Birney led Detroit with three draw controls and McCormick finished the contest with 10 saves, her third game of the season with double-digit saves.
Detroit was 14-of-16 on clears and had 23 shots, compared with 25 shots for UC Davis. UDM was 5-of-10 on free position attempts.
The Titans are slated to play their second game in California on Wednesday, facing St. Mary's for a 7 p.m. ET game.
