COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (3/14/2015) -- It was a nip and tuck affair throughout the game, but three-straight goals by the Air Force Academy sent the Falcons to a 9-6 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team on Saturday.
Senior
Shayne Adams had two goals on the afternoon, while sophomore
Kyle Beauregard and freshman
Mark Anstead tallied a goal and an assist. Sophomore
Jason Weber made seven saves in net.
Both Detroit (4-3) and Air Force (4-4) traded the lead back and forth all game long, but the Falcons scored four times in the final period. The first put UDM down 6-5, but the red, white and blue were able to knot it at 6-6 as freshman
Sean Birney found Adams, who beat the goalie to square things with 8:35 left.
From there, Air Force was able to net goals three times in the last 6:19 to pull away for the win.
The Titans were edged in shots, 27-23, and ground balls, 26-20, but were 13-of-14 in clears and a perfect 1-of-1 with the man-up.
The Falcons got on the board first three minutes in, but Detroit was able to tie it up as
Sean Birney hooked up with
Kyle Beauregard and he laced one in midway through the period. After another Air Force goal, UDM took a 3-2 lead as senior
Brandon Beauregard and Anstead posted unassisted goals.
Air Force was able to record the only goal of the second period to make it a 3-3 game at the half, but Detroit grabbed a 4-3 advantage five minutes into the third as
Kyle Beauregard set up Adams for his first strike of the contest.
Detroit was not able to hold that as Air Force jumped out in front, 5-4, but late in the third, the Titans took advantage of an Air Force penalty as Anstead fed senior
Scott Drummond and he tallied his fourth power play marker of the season with 1:09 on the clock.
Junior
Damien Hicks was 9-of-17 in faceoffs with two ground balls.
Kyle Beauregard had a career-high four ground balls and senior
Chris Shevins picked up three GB's.
The Titans will now head into MAAC play as they travel to Quinnipiac next Saturday, March 21. Game time is slated for Noon.
Game Notes:Detroit is now 0-2 all-time against Air Force with both of those games on the road… Adams ran his consecutive point scoring streak to 53-straight games, the highest among current NCAA Division I players… Detroit did not commit a penalty for the first time in program history…
Sean Birney had a season-high two assists… The seven saves by Weber marked the first time in his 18 career games that he did not post double-digit stops… The Titans' 23 shots were the fewest since tallying 20 at Ohio State in 2013, while the 27 shots allowed were the fewest since allowing 27 against Siena in the 2013 MAAC Championship...
