THIBODAUX, La. (3/2/2015) – Following a 45 minute delay the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its only game Monday night, 9-1, to Nicholls State at the Colonel Softball Complex.
Detroit (1-9) scored early as a seeing-eye single up the middle off the bat of senior
Kayla Kostich brought home junior
Jennifer Cottle from third to give the Titans a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Cottle led off the game with four pitch walk, before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error.
But Detroit's lead didn't last long as two Colonels were able to cross the plate in the bottom half of the first, before adding one more in the second to build a 3-1 lead.
Cottle then found herself in scoring range again in the top of the third inning as she sat a second with two outs when Kostich came to the plate. But this time the senior wasn't able to deliver as she struck out swinging on a 3-2 count to end the threat.
Nicholls State (10-6) would then add three more runs in the bottom of the third, before tapping on another three in the bottom of the fifth to end the game 9-1.
The Titans will stay in Louisiana as they travel to Hammond to face Ball State and Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, March 3, before playing a doubleheader at Southern Miss on Wednesday, March 4.
Detroit will conclude its Spring Break tour with a doubleheader against Holy Cross on Thursday, March 5 in Baton Rouge, La.
