YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (3/21/2015) – Eight different Titans recorded a hit but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its final two games of the weekend series on Saturday at Youngstown State. The Penguins won the first game 10-7, before taking the nightcap 5-1 at the YSU Softball Complex.
Senior
Kayla Kostich finished 1-of-4 at the plate with one run scored in the first game to extend her hitting streak to eight-straight games, before finishing 0-of-3 in the second contest.
Detroit (1-20, 0-3 HL) got on the board in the top of the first inning following an RBI single from junior
Christa McGahuey to bring freshman
Alex Astorga across the plate.
Youngstown State (10-12, 3-0 HL) would respond with three runs in the bottom of the first and hold a 3-1 lead until the fifth inning.
In the top of the fifth the Titans would take the lead after scoring four runs on four hits including a 2-run single to centerfield off the bat of
Sarah Mauser to build a 5-3 lead.
Detroit would hold that lead until the Penguins scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth inning off five hits and one error to take a 10-5 lead heading into the seventh.
Detroit would score two runs during a two-out rally after
Savanna Ferstle doubled to right field to make the score 10-7, but that was as close as the score would get as YSU took the first game.
YSU used a pair of home runs to win the nightcap as Stevie Taylor hit a 3-run homer in the first inning and Sarah Dowd added a 2-run blast in the second to build a 5-0 lead.
The Penguins would maintain that lead until the seventh inning, before
Vanessa Garcia drove in
Jennifer Cottle with one out to make the final 5-1.
Detroit will visit East Lansing for a contest against Michigan State on Tuesday, March 24. The first-pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Secchia Stadium.
