TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (4/17/2015) -- Senior thrower
Colin Cashner broke his own school record in the hammer throw Friday as the University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's track and field teams opened the weekend at the Gibson Invitational on the campus of Indiana State.
Cashner had a toss of 63.40 meters (208") to surpass the school-record throw of 63.15 meters that he reached at last week's Northwood Open. He again edged Central Michigan's Cole Walderzak to win the event in a field of 18 competitors. Fellow senior
Eric Lewis placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 56.64 meters (185' 10"). The pair combined for 14 of Detroit's 20 points on the men's side during the opening day. Junior
Jake Millyard threw 43.04 meters (141' 2") in the hammer.
Senior
Lauren Berlin led the Detroit women in the hammer throw with a hurl of 45.68 meters (149' 10"). Sophomore
Ashley Bayles finished with a best throw of 35.97 meters (118' 0") and freshman
Delaney O'Rourke was just behind with a throw of 35.05 meters (115' 0").
Sophomore
Ryan Leahy fourth out of 11 runners in the 5,000 meter run. He had a time of 15:17.87.
The Detroit women finished sixth in the 4x100 meter relay. The squad of
Aisha Potts-Tyre,
Alyson Hamilton,
Brogan Holmes and
Allison Garner finished with time of 48.70. Potts-Tyre and senior
Hana Hunt placed 12th and 14th in the long jump with leaps of 4.97 meters (16' 3.75") and 4.67 meters (15' 4"), respectively.
The UDM men's team was eighth in the 4x100 meter relay as the quartet of
Zach Sand,
Zach Arnold,
Colton Wirgau and
Joe Harmon combined for a time of 43.71. Sand also competed for the Titans in the long jump, reaching 5.67 meters (18' 7.25").
Indiana State leads the field on both sides through Friday's competition. The meet began Thursday with the combined events, but the Titans opened their portion of the Gibson Invitational on Friday evening. The meet concludes on Saturday with the remaining events.
