DAYTON, Ohio (4/18/2015) – Freshman
Savanna Ferstle's RBI single gave the University of Detroit Mercy softball team a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning, but its wasn't enough as the Wright State Raiders rallied for two runs including a walk-off single from Hanna Floyd to take the nightcap 6-5 on Saturday in Horizon League play.
The Raiders also won the first game 5-2 at WSU Softball Field
Wright State (15-26, 10-4 HL) took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning before the Titans put together a three-run two out rally to take the lead 5-4.
Senior
Kat Hoffman reached first on a fielder's choice after the Raiders tried to turn a double play to end the game, but could only get the lead runner at second. Hoffman then advanced to third following a double from freshman
Alex Astorga. Both runners then moved up a base, with Hoffman scoring, after Montana Wear attempted to intentionally walk senior
Kayla Kostich but threw first pitch off the backstop.
Wear made sure next three balls reached the catcher to put Kostich on first as junior
Christa McGahuey came to the plate with runners on the corners. McGahuey then delivered with an RBI single up the middle to tie the score, before Ferstle followed with her own RBI single to right field on the next pitch to give Detroit a 5-4 lead.
Hoffman started the bottom of the seventh in the circle for Detroit and got the first batter to ground out to second before giving up a triple to Libby Pfeffer. She then intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases, before handing the ball off the freshman
Hannah Leppek.
Leppek's first two pitches were both strikes, before hitting Kortney Tackett with the third pitch to tie the score at five. She then forced Floyd to hit a slow dribbling groundball back to the circle, but couldn't get the force out at the plate as the Raiders found away to win to stay in the hunt for the regular season championship.
Detroit (5-37, 1-11 HL) scored the first two runs of the first game following another RBI from Ferstle, before Kostich stole home. But the Raiders would tie the score in the third inning on a triple from Tackett, before taking the lead for good on a 2-run single from Floyd in the fifth inning.
Ferstle finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBI and two walks, while her classmate Astorga finished 3-for-7 with two runs scored.
Detroit will return home for its final weekend series of the year as the Titans host Horizon League foe Valparaiso for a three game series on Saturday and Sunday (April 25-26). Saturday will be a doubleheader against the Crusaders with the first game beginning at 12 p.m.; followed by the second at 2 p.m. Sunday will be Senior Day for the Titans with one game scheduled for noon at Buysse Ballpark.
