NORFOLK, Va. (4/18/2015) -- Senior goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick tied a school record Saturday with nine ground balls, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-9 Atlantic Sun game at Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon.
Detroit (7-7, 4-2 Atlantic Sun) drops to third place in the Atlantic Sun standings behind Old Dominion and Jacksonville. The Titans, which have already clinched a spot in the Atlantic Sun Championships, have a chance to earn the No. 3 seed in the tournament with a victory over Furman in next Saturday's regular season finale.
Senior
Annie Mendoza added her fourth hat trick of the season with three goals, while senior
Tessa Keuler upped her league-leading assist total to 26 with three assists on the day. Keuler also surpassed her career high for goals in a season with her 25th and 26th goals.
McCormick made 11 saves for the Titans, her eighth game of the season with 10 or more saves. McCormick's nine ground balls tied Brett Yenger's school-record that was set back against Canisius in 2010. McCormick, whose previous career best for ground balls in a game was seven, also had two caused turnovers for the Titans.
The first 18 minutes of the game yielded just three goals with Detroit scoring two of them. The Titans tallied the game's first goal as Mendoza scored off an assist by Keuler at the 25:38 mark of the first half. After a ODU goal, sophomore
Kelsi Pritchard took a feed from sophomore
Julie Castner to give the Titans a 2-1 lead with 14:32 in the first half. The Monarchs (12-4, 5-1 A-Sun) would go on a goal-scoring run to take a 9-3 lead at halftime.
Freshman
Jordyn Beam tallied the first goal of the second half off an assist from Keuler. ODU scored four of the next five goals to take an 13-5 lead, but the Titans wouldn't go away.
Detroit scored four straight markers in the second half to pull to within four goals, 13-9, with 9:06 left in the game.
Junior
Kylie Birney started the spree with her first of the game and Mendoza followed just 22 seconds later. Keuler scored Detroit's eighth goal at the 9:39 mark and Mendoza scored 33 seconds after for Detroit's fourth straight goal. The scoring streak forced Old Dominion into a timeout.
That was as close as the Titans would get, however, as Old Dominion would score three more times to conclude the scoring.
Birney had four draw controls to lead the Titans. Senior defender
Morgan Lear had three ground balls. Detroit finished the game 1-of-8 on free position shots. The Titans had the edge in ground balls (22-15), while the Monarchs finished the game with the advantage in shots (35-26) and draw controls (17-9).
Next up for Detroit is Senior Day as the Titans host Furman on Saturday, April 25 at Titan Field. The game is set for an 11 a.m. start and is the opener of a doubleheader of lacrosse that day at Titan Field.
