DETROIT (4/25/2015) --
The seniors had the spotlight before the game and then their younger teammates gave them the best gift they could scoring all nine goals as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team beat Furman, 9-7, on Saturday afternoon.

The win moved Detroit to 8-7 on the year tying a school record for the most victories as well as an undefeated season at home going 5-0 on the year. UDM also improved to 5-2 in the Atlantic Sun and clinched the third seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Championship. Detroit is set to play sixth-seeded Stetson in the opening round of the A-Sun Championships. The game is set for Wednesday in Jacksonville, Fla.

Freshman Jessica Snyder led the way against Furman with a career-high five goals, while Kylie Birney and Kelsi Pritchard tallied two apiece. Senior Lexie McCormick made four saves in net and the Titans posted 10 caused turnovers on the day.

The game featured four ties as both Detroit and Furman (9-6, 4-3 A-Sun) battled for position and the higher seed in the Atlantic Sun Championship. Both teams went at it on the defensive front forcing turnovers and failed clears. Detroit got on the board first as Snyder beat the keeper with 22:14 on the clock in the first. UDM then went up 2-0 as Birney took a pass and then streaked down the field firing one to the back of the net at the 12-minute mark.

Furman tied it up with two-straight goals, but Snyder then recorded her second marker with under five minutes to go to give the red, white and blue a 3-2 advantage. Furman was able to knot the score at 3-3 with a goal with six seconds left in the first half to send the teams tied at the break.

The second half was back and forth too as Kelsi Pritchard put Detroit back in front, 4-3, only for the Paladins to tie it at 4-4 six minutes into the stanza. Snyder then notched her hat trick at the with 21:16 on the clock for a 5-4 lead, but back came Furman to tie it at 5-5 just a minute later.

The lead trading continued as Birney gave the Titans the lead back with 15 minutes left and Snyder pushed the advantage to two goals, 7-5, as her fourth marker made it a 7-5 game. Pritchard gave the Titans some breathing room as her second tally pushed the lead to 8-5 with under 10 minutes left, the largest lead of the game for either team.

Snyder scored Detroit's final goal for her career-high fifth tally. She is the second Detroit freshman to score five goals this season after Jordyn Beam notched five goals against Howard.

Junior Ally Shrader had a game-high six ground balls for Detroit. Birney and Lear each finished the game with two caused turnovers.

Both teams finished the game with nine draw controls. Detroit had the shot advantage, 28-14, and lead in ground balls, 19-16. The Titan defense forced the Paladins into 21 turnovers. The Titans also finished the game 12-for-15 on clear attempts.
