DETROIT (4/3/2015)
- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped the first game of its weekend series, 5-4, to UIC Friday at Buysse Ballpark.

Detroit (2-26, 0-4 HL) tied score at four in the bottom of the fifth inning following a single from Christa McGahuey that resulted in a error by the leftfielder to allow both Kayla Kostich and Sarah Mauser to score.

The Titans would then put runners on second and third with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning, but couldn't score after Mauser grounded out to the shortstop.

The Flames (11-14, 2-2 HL) would take advantage of a throwing error in the top of the seventh to get one runner on with one out. Eleni Polites would steal second before tagging on a fly ball to right center to advance to third. Following the cutoff Polites noticed nobody was paying attention so she took off for home and was able to beat the throw to put UIC back in front 5-4.

Detroit sent its top three hitters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but Kostich lined out to first, followed by a McGahuey popup and a Savanna Ferstle ground out to end the game.

Seven Titans recorded a hit in the game, with both Ferstle and Dayton Yingling finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI.

McGahuey started for Detroit and pitched 6.2 innings scattering seven hits with three earned runs and one strikeout.

The red, white and blue will complete the weekend series with a doubleheader against the Flames on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Buysse Ballpark.
