BUFFALO, N.Y. (4/7/2015) – Junior
Christa McGahuey hit a grand slam en route driving in five runs in the first game as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team snapped the Golden Griffins 7-game winning streak with a 11-5 victory on Tuesday at Demske Sports Complex.
Canisius (14-10) took the nightcap 5-3 after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the first game, Detroit (3-29) trailed 5-4 heading into the fifth inning before loading the bases for McGahuey, who cleared them with a blast over the centerfield wall to give the Titans an 8-5 lead.
Detroit would then add to its lead with
Sarah Mauser's first collegiate home run in the sixth inning and two more runs in the seventh to snap the Golden Griffins 7-game winning streak 11-5.
Canisius scored the first three runs of the game, before Detroit responded with four runs, including a pair of RBI singles from McGahuey and
Savanna Ferstle to take a 4-3 lead.
The Titans lead didn't last long as Canisius scored two in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead 5-4.
Freshman
Hannah Leppek pitched 6.1 innings for Detroit scattering seven hits with one earned run, while striking out three for her second collegiate win.
In the nightcap, Detroit held a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth inning, before Canisius scored four runs en route to splitting the doubleheader with a 5-3 victory.
The Titans scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning after back-to-back doubles from
Sam Henderson and
Katy Severson, followed by a pair of singles from
Vanessa Garcia and Mauser to build a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Griffins would answer back with a run in the bottom of the second to trim the lead to 2-1, before Kostich scored on a Ferstle single in the fifth inning to extend Detroit's lead to 3-1.
Detroit will stay in New York to face the Buffalo Bulls on Wednesday for another doubleheader with the first game beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Nan Harvey Field. The Titans will then return home to host Metro Series rival Oakland this weekend at Buysse Ballpark.
