GREEN BAY (5/2/2015) – Senior
Kayla Kostich recorded four hits and drove in four runs as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team split it's final doubleheader of the season at Green Bay on Saturday at Phoenix Field.
Detroit (10-40, 6-14 HL) won the first game 7-3, before Green Bay (17-26, 9-11 HL) took the nightcap 14-2 in five innings.
The six wins in Horizon League play are the most for Detroit since 2006, while the 10 wins overall are the most since 2012.
Kostich ended her collegiate career in style as she finished 4-for-8 at the plate with two doubles, one home run and four RBI. She was a perfect 3-for-3 in the first game with three RBI and three runs scored. Her home run in the first game was her 10th of the season, which is tied with
Christa McGahuey for the third most ever record in a season in Titan history.
The Titans jumped out early in the first game as freshmen
Alex Astorga and
Savanna Ferstle both hit home runs to give Detroit a 3-0 lead. Astorga hit her first collegiate long ball to right center for a 1-0 lead, before Ferstle connected for her fifth of the season two batters later to make the score 3-0.
The Phoenix would trim the lead to 3-1 following a run in the second inning, before Kostich delivered her 10th of the season in the fifth inning to put the Titans back up by three, 4-1.
Green Bay would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, following a two run shot from Alyssa Johnson to make the score 4-3, before the Titans scored three in the sixth inning to help secure the win.
Kostich drove in two runs with a double, before advancing to third on the throw home. She then scored on a wild pitch to make the final 7-3.
McGahuey started in the circle for Detroit and pitched her second complete game of the week allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out four for her third win of the week.
The Titans scored the first run in the nightcap after an RBI double from Kostich – her second of the day – but the Phoenix answered back with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, before adding two in the second inning and four more in both the third and fourth innings to avoid the sweep.
