DETROIT (8/28/15) - For the third-consecutive time in the series, it took Detroit and IUPUI 90 minutes and a pair of overtimes to produce an even score as the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team ended its season opener with a 1-1 draw on Friday afternoon from Titan Field.
Detroit got off to a strong start, outshooting the visiting Jaguars, 4-0, in the opening minutes. The best chance saw sophomore
Spiro Pliakos sneak behind the defense and had a clear look from outside the box, but his blast was denied to keep the game scoreless.
IUPUI flipped the momentum and struck first with a goal in the 23rd minute. Nick Anderson took a corner kick and connected with Clint Hoffar, who sent a header into the top-left corner of the net from the top of the box.
The Jaguars carried play through the rest of the half and much of the second frame, outshooting the hosts 9-0 over the stretch.
Detroit goalkeeper and reigning Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year,
Nathan Steinwascher, kept the Titans in the game with seven saves, each seemingly more crucial than the next.
In the 81st minute, a corner kick from junior midfielder
Adam Clauss provided for some late game dramatics. Clauss finessed a shot through the tightest of windows and scored the equalizer straight off the corner, knotting the game at 1-1.
The teams traded looks over the final minutes of regulation and after a pair of scoreless overtimes, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
IUPUI posted advantages in shots (16-11), shots on goal (8-5) and corner kicks (11-2).
Clauss recorded a goal with two shots on net, while junior
Tyler Moorman led the team with four shots. Pliakos and
Martin Lang Jr., also each recorded a shot on goal to round out the top offensive performers for the Titans.
Detroit returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 30, against Marshall. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. from Titan Field.
