DETROIT (1/10/2016) -- The Titans got in an early hole and started the charge for its biggest comeback in school history, but the push wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a 92-74 contest to Valparaiso on Sunday.
The win snapped Detroit's 12-game home winning streak as UDM fell to 9-6 on the season and 3-1 in the Horizon League. Valpo – the defending conference champion – improved to 13-3, 3-0 in the HL.
Senior
Anton Wilson led Detroit with 23 points – 20 in the second half where he was 4-of-5 shooting with three 3-pointers and 9-of-9 at the line. Sophomore
Paris Bass netted 16 points with a team-high 10 rebounds – his second double-double in the last three games - and junior
Chris Jenkins added 13 points and a team-best four assists.
Detroit was down by as many as 27 in the first half, but the Titans caught fire in the second to cut it all the way down to seven in the second stanza.
The comeback attempt began late in the first half as Detroit found themselves down 46-19 with 2:44 remaining. Freshman
Josh McFolley had two free throws and Wilson connected on his first triple of the contest. UDM would go into the break down, 50-29.
The Titans kept chipping away in the second as Jenkins had two free throws and Wilson made another three to make it 50-34 at the 17:46 mark. More free throws from Wilson and a layup from Bass pulled the Titans within 13, 52-39, with 16:45 left.
Valparaiso raised it back to 15, 58-43, but the red, white and blue kept on coming as Jenkins started a spurt with a three. Later on, a trey by Wilson made it a 10-point game, 64-54, midway through the second. The Titans inched closer the next time down the court on two more Wilson free throws, and he would bring the crowd to its feet with another long trifecta to trim it to seven, 66-59, with 9:01 left.
Detroit was also down by seven, 68-61, with 7:25 remaining, but the Crusaders wouldn't budge anymore.
Bass also had three assists and a block. Senior
Carlton Brundidge had eight points and five boards and sophomore
Jaleel Hogan added six points with four rebounds.
The Titans will now get ready for the #MetroSeries battle with Oakland as Detroit hosts the Golden Grizzlies on Saturday, Jan. 16. It will be a basketball doubleheader with the women facing Northern Kentucky at Noon, with the men's game at 3:00 p.m.
