DAYTON, Ohio (1/18/2016) -- In a game that featured 50 fouls and 61 combined free throws, sophomore
Paris Bass tied his career high with 28 points, but a late rally by Wright State gave the Raiders a 77-76 victory at the Nutter Center on Monday night.
Bass was 7-of-15 from the field, 3-of-6 from three and 11-of-14 at the line to go with six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Senior
Anton Wilson netted 16 points with four boards, and sophomore
Jaleel Hogan finished with 13 points in just 15 minutes of action.
The Titans had a five-point lead, 74-69, with 2:05 left when Wright State (11-8, 5-1 HL) tied it up with five-straight points. A free throw apiece by Bass and Hogan has the Titans leading, 76-74 with 35 seconds on the clock, but after a missed three by the Raiders, WSU was able to come up with the offensive rebound and hit a three for a 77-76 advantage with 18 ticks left.
The Titans called timeout to set up a play, but Bass' three did not go in and the ball landed out of bounds to WSU with 0.7 remaining.
Detroit (9-8, 3-3 HL) shot 50.0 percent from the field (25-of-50), including 52.2 percent in the second half (12-of-23), and had 15 assists on its 25 baskets.
Junior
Jarod Williams ended with seven points, while freshman
Josh McFolley had those big three points and a team-high four assists.
It was a battle early on, but UDM led by as many as six in the first half and a late run gave the Titans a 37-32 lead at the break. The Titans came out on fire in the second, hitting five of their first six shots. Bass alone had 10 points in the first four minutes of the second stanza as Detroit surged in front by 14, 53-39, at the 15:34 mark.
Wright State scored six straight to get the score back under 10, but the Titans would go in front by double digits again, this time by 11, 57-46. WSU cut it to seven after that, 57-50, but a bucket by freshman
Gerald Blackshear and a three-point play by Williams put the red, white and blue ahead by 12, 62-50, a little less than midway through the period.
Detroit also led by 12 at 66-54 with 7:12 remaining when the Raiders started making their final charge going on a 13-3 run over the next four minutes to trim the deficit to just two, 69-67. A turnaround jumper by Hogan stopped that, and Detroit eventually pushed the margin to five, 74-69, as McFolley connected on his only basket of the game, a trifecta, with 2:05 left.
The Titans will now get ready for a long road trip this weekend as Detroit travels to Milwaukee on Saturday, Jan. 23, and Green Bay on Monday, Jan. 25.
