Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Detroit’s Valiant Comeback Attempt Falls Short At Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wisc. (1/25/2016) -- The Titans trimmed a 17-point first-half deficit and sent the game to overtime, but Green Bay was able to get the offense going in the extra session as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 115-108, on Monday night at the Resch Center.

Junior Chris Jenkins tallied 25 points and seven boards and sophomore Paris Bass had 23 points, a team-best eight rebounds and career-high six blocks. Bass netted 21 of his points in the second half and finished the game 8-of-16 from the field and 7-of-8 at the line. Jenkins had 20 of his points in the first stanza and ended the game with a 9-for-19 clip, including a career-best five triples.

Detroit (9-10, 3-5 HL) trailed by 17 points in the first half and 11 with 16 minutes left when the Titans started chopping away at the Green Bay (13-8, 5-3 HL) lead. The Titans would eventually tie it at 87-87 with 2:16 remaining. Green Bay extended the margin to five, 89-84, but the Titans came back to knot it again and take it to overtime.

UDM was down by four, 95-91, with 14 seconds left when Wilson drilled a three and was fouled on the play. His free throw made it 95-all to send the game to extras.

Senior Anton Wilson recorded 17 points and six rebounds. Senior Carlton Brundidge had 15 points, six rebounds and three assists and junior Jarod Williams added 12 points.

The Titans got it under 10 the first time as freshman Gerald Blackshear twice got loose inside for layups, the second one making it 57-48 at the 18:08 mark.

Later on, Detroit put together an 8-0 run to get within five, 63-58, as Wilson started it with a pair of free throws. A basket by Jenkins came next, before redshirt-freshman Aaron Foster-Smith had two-straight athletic moves to get to the rim for layups.

UDM pulled within three, 67-64, on a Bass layup with 12:45 left, but Green Bay quickly recovered to push it back to eight, 72-64. The Titans were able to make it a one-possession game again with 9:04 remaining as Brundidge had back-to-back buckets to bring the score to 75-73 in favor of the hosts. It was also a two-point game at 83-81 with 3:39 left as Bass got inside for a layup, but the Phoenix countered with a three.

That is when one final charge tied the game at 87-87 and set up Wilson's four-point play to send it to overtime.

Bass and freshman Josh McFolley had three assists apiece, while Wilson had three steals and McFolley and Blackshear netted five points each.

Detroit finished the game shooting 48.7 percent (38-of-78) from the field, including 52.6 percent (20-of-38) in the second half. The Titans also finished with nine steals and eight blocks.

The Titans had an early 5-3 lead on baskets by Wilson and Jenkins, but Green Bay would open it up with a 14-0 run to take a 17-5 lead at the 13:18 mark.  Detroit scored six straight after that, but the Phoenix pushed it to double digits again, 22-12, midway through the period.

Another Titan 6-0 spurt trimmed the deficit to four, 22-18, but Green Bay withstood that charge and increased the lead back to 10, 38-28, with 4:34 remaining. The Titans would then trail by as many as 17, 51-34, before a triple by Jenkins and two free throws by Wilson made it 51-39 at the break.

UDM shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from the field, but started the period 2-of-10. Detroit also forced eight turnovers and led in fast-break points, 16-6.

Detroit will return home for a two-game home stand this weekend as the Titans host Northern Kentucky on Friday, Jan. 29, at 7:00 p.m., and Wright State on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the game against NKU, Detroit will retire the jersey of NBA Hall of Famer Spencer Haywood.
