INDIANAPOLIS (10/19/2016) -- Striking two goals in the first 15 minutes of the match Wednesday night and playing stout defense the rest of the way, the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team earned a 2-0 road victory at host IUPUI amidst a rainstorm.

The game was delayed for more than one hour before first kick due to rain and again at halftime for another lengthy delay. The delays did little to stop the Titans, however, as Detroit Mercy found the back of the net early and often against the Jaguars.

Senior Matt Harkema gave the Titans a 1-0 lead, converting off a rebound in the box after junior Matt DeVries' initial shot was saved. Just minutes later, Justin Schueneman tossed a throw-in off a IUPUI player and across the goal line as Detroit Mercy took a 2-0 lead just 14:51 into the match.

Detroit Mercy played strong defense after its early lead. IUPUI took six shots in each half, but didn't record a shot on goal in the second half.

Sophomore keeper Josh Flamme, making his second career start in net, turned away all three shots on goal for his first career shutout. Flamme made all three of his saves in the final 10 minutes of the first half.

The Titans had nine shots in the contest -- three of them off the foot of DeVries. Harkema and senior Tommy Bowman each had two shots on goal. Six of Detroit Mercy's nine shots were on net. The Titans also had a strong lead in corner kicks, by a 7-1 margin.

With the win, the Titans earned their second road triumph of the season and second road shutout. It was the final non-conference match of the regular season for the Titans, which returns to Horizon League play for their final three contests.

Harkema's goal was his second of the year and ninth of his career, which is tied for the most on the team with teammate Tyler Moorman. Of those nine career markers, six of them are of the game-winning variety.
