HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (10/22/2016) -- For the second-straight match, the University of Detroit Mercy shut out its opponent on the road with the Titans earning a 1-0 Horizon League win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday night.

The lone Titan goal was scored by defender Garret Weaver, who tallied his first collegiate marker on a header in the box with 20 minutes left in the match. The goal came off a free kick, with senior Tommy Bowman serving the ball into the box to junior Adam Clauss, who headed the ball across the box to Weaver.

The Titans (3-8-4 overall, 1-4-2 Horizon League) held NKU in check the rest of the way to collect their first Horizon League victory of the season. It was Detroit Mercy's third shutout of the season and second straight. Sophomore keeper Josh Flamme turned away four shots in net to earn his second-straight shutout.

Detroit Mercy had several good scoring opportunities in the contest, hitting the crossbar in a second half off a header. In the first half, Northern Kentucky made two-straight team saves as senior Matt Harkema's shot was turned away by a defender before junior Spiro Pliakos' rebound attempt was also headed away by a defender with the goalkeeper out of position.

Both teams had five shots in the first half and NKU had a 5-3 edge in the second half. Detroit Mercy took five of the six corner kicks in the match. Junior Matt DeVries, Harkema and Weaver were all credited with two shots. The Norse had four saves, but only one was by the keeper.

Following its shutout against Northern Kentucky, the Titans now have a 220-minute shutout streak. Detroit Mercy improved to 3-4-4 in 11 road matches in 2016.

Garret Weaver is the second Titan to score his first collegiate goal this season after fellow defenseman Justin Murray scored on a PK against UIC. Weaver is the seventh different goal scorer this year for Detroit Mercy.
