TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (11/20/2016) -- Senior
Chris Jenkins had a team-high 18 points and junior
Jaleel Hogan added 12 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 100-71, at Florida State on Sunday evening at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
The game was the third of four contests in the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Sophomore
Josh McFolley posted seven points and a team-high four assists and sophomore
Aaron Foster-Smith netted six points and a team and career-high seven boards. Freshman
Corey Allen finished with six points and five caroms and rookie
Ed Carter III hit a pair of 3-pointers and ended with six points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Florida State came out hitting some shots early, but the Titans went on a 9-0 run to jump out in front 13-10 at the 13:40 mark. Hogan had two baskets in that time and it was capped by a triple from McFolley.Â
The Titans would later find themselves down by one point, 20-19, as Carter III hit his second-straight trey with 10:26 left in the first half. FSU answered with a 23-6 run over the next six minutes to open a 43-25 advantage and would lead 48-35 at the break.
The Seminoles led by 17, 52-35, early in the second half when the red, white and blue began chipping away getting within eight points. Hogan got inside and laid it in with a foul and converted the free throw and after a missed FSU shot, Jenkins hit a jumper and the Titans were down 64-56 with 13:13 remaining.Â
Detroit Mercy could not get any closer as FSU broke the game open with a 19-2 run after that.Â
Jenkins also corralled sixrebounds and had two assists. Freshman
Malik Eichler scored five points and junior
DeShawndre Black had four points and three helpers.Â
The Titans shot 41.2 percent from the field with eight three-pointers,Â
Detroit Mercy will continue its long road journey on Wednesday, Nov. 23, when the Titans visit New Hampshire in the final game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Game time for that contest is set for 2 p.m. ET.
GAME NOTES:
This was just the second career meeting between the two schools – both on the road - where Florida State now leads 2-0… Florida State came into the game receiving votes in both polls... The Titans traveled approximately 3,484 miles in the last week… Titan alum Dwayne Kelly – a three-time All-HL selection - was at the game… Carter III registered 10-straight assists on the season before recording his first turnover… Hogan and Jenkins were in double figures for the third time in four games… Jenkins now has 79 career 3-pointers… Foster-Smith's previous career high in rebounds was six posted on two occasions...Â
