Morgan Girardi and
Kaitlyn Wandelt each tallied two goals in their first collegiate games and six different Titans scored goals as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team opened the 2016 season with a 22-8 loss at No. 18-ranked Ohio State.
Detroit doubled its goal total from last year's loss to the Buckeyes, posting five goals in the opening 30 minutes and then scoring three more in the second half.
Wandelt scored her first collegiate goal and the first Detroit goal of the season six minutes into the game, to cut the Ohio State lead to 3-1. Girardi scored both her goals in the first half, tallying her first collegiate marker at the 11:31 mark of the opening frame.
The Titans scored four of the final seven goals in the first half, as seniors
Kylie Birney and
Michaela Schwartz also found the back of the net. Wandelt scored the first goal of the second half for the Titans and classmate
Lexie Kinmond posted her first career goal with 12 minutes left in the game.
Sophomore
Emma Mucci closed out the scoring for Detroit, scoring off an assist from Wandelt, who finished with a team-high three points.
Detroit scored seven of its eight goals on free-position opportunities. Birney and Wandelt each had five shots to lead the team. The Titans finished with 18 shots in the contest. Detroit had 10 free-position chances, while OSU finished with just one.
Freshman goalkeeper
Allison McDonough made her debut in goal for the Titans, posting five saves and playing all 60 minutes in net.
Wandelt and
Emma DeYoung both had two draw controls, while senior
Ally Shrader led the squad with two ground balls.
Detroit was 5-of-7 on clears and only turned the ball over 10 times, while forcing the Buckeyes into nine turnovers.
Up NextThe Titans return to action next weekend, hosting Oregon on Sunday, Feb. 21 for their home opener at Ultimate Soccer Arenas. The contest is set for a 12 p.m. and admission is free.
