PONTIAC, Mich. (2/21/2016) -- A furious second-half rally from the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team fell just short Sunday afternoon as the Titans fell to visiting Oregon by an 17-13 margin at Ultimate Soccer Arenas. It was the home opener for the Titans (0-2).

Detroit scored seven-straight goals, three just before halftime and four more to open the second half. The Titans once trailed in the game 7-0, but pulled to within one goal, 9-8, after their seventh consecutive marker at the 25:10 mark of the second half.

Even after the Ducks (2-0) rallied to regain a cushion, Detroit again showed its fight, scoring four out of the final five goals in the contest. The Titans ran out of time, however, as Oregon played keep away in the final minutes of the game to seal the victory.

Freshmen Kaitlyn Wandelt and Morgan Girardi led Detroit each notching their first career hat tricks. Both players had four goals and one assist for five points. Senior Kylie Birney and freshmen Lexie Kinmond also added two goals for the Titans. Freshman goalkeeper Allison McDonough made 11 saves in net for Detroit.

The Titans went down early, but clawed back in dramatic fashion, tallying four goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Birney got Detroit on the scoreboard with her second of the year. Wandelt opened the streak of seven-straight goals with her first of the day, which was followed by another by Birney. Girardi found the back of the net with just 13 seconds left in the first half, as Detroit close the gap to 9-4 at halftime.

UDM continued its surge in the second half, scoring four goals in the first five minutes of the frame. After a great clear by senior Ally Shrader, she found Kinmond, who flicked it into the back of the net. Girardi and Wandelt assisted on each other's goals and Jordyn Beam finished off the run with her first goal of the season as Detroit pulled to within one, 9-8.

Oregon answered with a goal, but Detroit again cut the deficit to one goal after Wandelt completed the hat trick to make it 10-9 with 23:21 left. The Ducks would secure several ground balls and countered with the next six goals.

Detroit had one final rally, however, scoring four of the final five goals. Kinmond scored off a feed from sophomore Kelsi Pritchard and Girardi tallied the next two goals. All three tallies came in a span of 2:14 as the Titans trailed 16-12 with 8:27 remaining. Oregon countered with a marker and Wandelt finished off the scoring for Detroit, scoring her fourth goal with 5:53 left on the clock.

Sophomore Emma Mucci led the Titans with three ground balls, while in addition to her five points, Wandelt posted three draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Birney, Girardi and Kinmond also had two draw controls each.
