CHICAGO (2/19/2016) -- The Titans overcame an early 12-point deficit as senior
Carlton Brundidge and sophomore
Paris Bass each tallied over 20 points and the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team won its fourth-straight road game, 83-72, on Friday night at UIC.
The win moved the Titans to 15-12 overall and 9-7 in the Horizon League. UDM won for the sixth time in its last seven games as it moved to fourth place in the conference standings.
Bass posted a team-high 22 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth-straight double-double to go with four assists, three blocks and three steals. Brundidge had 21 points and a game-high seven assists, and senior
Anton Wilson recorded 18 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Detroit was down 23-11 with eight minutes to go and 27-15 with 6:09 left to play in the first stanza when the Titans started their comeback. The charge included a three from Bass and a layup from freshman
Gerald Blackshear to trim the UIC lead to six, 29-23, at the 4:17 mark. Detroit kept battling and layups by Brundidge had the Titans within four, and the first half ended with Wilson sinking a triple to send the Titans into the break down by just one, 34-33.
Neither team shot the ball well as Detroit was at 33.3 percent (12-of-36), while UIC (5-21, 3-12) HLwas at 29.4 percent (10-of-34). Both teams also combined to go 2-of-18 from three with the Flames missing on all nine of their attempts and each team recording seven turnovers apiece.
A three by Bass gave the Titans the lead right out of the gates in the second half and Detroit would score seven in a row to take a seven-point lead, 49-42, with 14:25 left. Bass started that spurt with a jumper and then freshman
Josh McFolley hit a three and Hogan got an offensive rebound and put it in for two more.
The Titans would continue to stay in front until a run by UIC had the home team up by three, 60-57, with 8:22 remaining. That is when the Titans put the Flames away with a 13-0 charge over the next five minutes with the defense stepping up to hold UIC to 0-of-5 shooting with a pair of turnovers.
Brundidge started the comeback run with back-to-back baskets and then Bass had a bucket. Two free throws from Blackshear followed and after a turnover, Brundidge cut to the rim for another layup and a 67-60 lead. Junior
Chris Jenkins then converted two free throws and freshman
Aaron Foster-Smith split a pair and the Titans led by 10, 70-60, with under four minutes on the clock.
UIC had a basket to stop that, but a 10-2 spurt by the Titans ensued as Detroit upped its advantage to as many as 18, 80-62, with under a minute left.
Detroit ended up shooting 50.0 percent in the second half (15-of-30), including 5-of-9 from three and 15-of-22 at the free throw line. The Titans outrebounded their opponent for the seventh-straight game, 43-41, including 20-13 in the second half, and they also totaled 19 assists on their 27 field goals.
The Titans will now travel to league-leading Valparaiso as the Titans face the Crusaders on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 2:30 p.m. (EST).
