CLEVELAND, Ohio (2/4/2016) -- Rosanna Reynolds scored a game-high 26 points and
Brianne Cohen added a career-high-tying 21 as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team improved to 4-1 in Horizon League road games with a 66-60 victory over host Cleveland State.
Detroit improved to 6-4 in the Horizon League. The win was the second this season over Cleveland State for first-year head coach
Bernard Scott and the Titans. Scott previously was the associate head coach for the Vikings before being named Detroit's head coach last May.
Haleigh Ristovski pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds for Detroit (10-11 overall). The Titans shot 45.5 percent for the contest, including a 51 percent clip in the first half. The also Titans had the rebound advantage in the game, 45-34. Cohen sank her first eight shots of the game and finished 9-of-12 from the field. Reynolds shot 10-of-14 from the floor as the pair combined to shoot 19-of-26 for Detroit.
UDM jumped out to an 11-5 lead at the first media timeout of the game after a triple by freshman
Brittney Jackson. Cohen scored eight first quarter points, but CSU pulled to within one after the first quarter, 17-16. Detroit started the second quarter on an 11-5 run to take a 28-21 advantage. CSU THEN pulled to within five points, but Detroit tallied six of the final seven points in the second stanza to take a 37-27 halftime lead.
Cohen knocked down all six of her shots in the opening 20 minutes and led Detroit with 12 points at the halftime break. Detroit opened a 15-point lead in the third quarter, going up 49-34 with 4:21 left in the stanza. Reynolds took over offensively in the third, scoring the first seven Detroit points, and the Titans led after three, 52-40.
Cleveland State's Adesuwa Aideyman hit three-straight 3-pointers to open the scoring in the fourth quarter, but Reynolds answered with a trey from the top of the key off an assist from
Haleigh Ristovski. CSU would get within two, 57-55, with 3:53 left in the contest, but Detroit went on a run of its own.
Jackson hit both free throws after being fouled and Reynolds and Cohen followed with consecutive lay-ups to put the Titans up eight , 63-55. Cleveland State wouldn't get closer than four points for the rest of the game as Detroit held CSU to 1-of-6 shooting down the stretch in the final 2:37 of the game.
Reynolds sank a jumper in the paint with 30 seconds left to give Detroit a 65-59 lead as she scored 16 of her game-high 26 points in the second half to help propel the Titans to the win.
Detroit was 12-of-19 from the free throw line, with Reynolds sinking 5-of-5. Reynolds entered the game as the Horizon League leader in free throw percentage at 88.9 percent. She also added nine rebounds, while Cohen tallied eight boards, seven on the offensive end.
Lola Ristovski led Detroit with four assists.
The UDM defense held CSU to just 30.2 percent shooting for the game. The Vikings were also held in check from downtown, sinking 8-of-27 treys for a 29.6 percentage.
The Titans, which entered the game leading the HL in fewest turnovers per game at 13.5, had an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers in the contest as CSU had the advantage in steals, 13-5. Both teams finished with two blocks, while Detroit had advantages in points in the paint (36-18) and second-chance points (15-8).
Titan News & Notes• UDM is 4-1 in Horizon League road games this year. Its lone loss came at Green Bay.
• The Titans improved to 10-2 when shooting 40 percent or better from the field.
• Detroit has now allowed 60 points or fewer in each of the past two contests.
