Haleigh Ristovski hit the game-winning shot with 1.6 seconds left to lift the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team to a 69-68 victory at Youngstown State on Saturday at the Beeghly Center.
Detroit improved to 7-4 in the Horizon League and 5-1 in conference road contests. It also capped off a 2-0 week for the Titans, which are off to their best start since the 2012-13 season. The Titans went 3-1 on their four-game road trip and evened their record at 11-11 overall.
The Titans trailed 68-65 with 1:00 left in the game, but scored the final four points of the game. After a Detroit timeout, junior guard
Rosanna Reynolds converted on a lay-up with 46 seconds left to pull Detroit to within one point, 68-67. Detroit forced a YSU turnover on the ensuing possession as the shot clock ran out.
Reynolds missed on a jumper with nine seconds left, but Detroit earned one more opportunity as the ball went out of bounds off YSU.
Haleigh Ristovski drove down the baseline and converted on a tough shot underneath the rim with just 1.6 seconds left on the clock.
YSU called timeout to draw up one more play, but the Penguins never got a shot off in the last second.
Detroit led at halftime, 36-31, behind a strong first half shooting the ball. The Titans hit 48 percent of shots in the first half (13-of-27). YSU scored the first four points of the third quarter, but Detroit out-scored YSU, 22-8 during the rest of the stanza, which included an 10-0 run.
The run started on a triple by sophomore
Nicole Urbanick at the 6:59 mark and was followed by a bucket down low by sophomore
Brianne Cohen. Urbanick sank another 3-pointer and
Haleigh Ristovski converted on a jumper to complete the run and give Detroit a 46-35 lead. The Titans extended that lead to 17 points and led after three quarters, 58-43. Cohen and Urbanick combined to score 18 of Detroit's 22 points in the third stanza.
Youngstown State scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter, but freshman
Brittney Jackson ended that run with a 3-pointer. Jackson hit her third triple of the contest with 4:07 left to put Detroit up 65-60. The Penguins tallied the next nine points, but Detroit scored the final four, capped off with
Haleigh Ristovski's finish at the rim with 1.6 ticks on the clock.
Cohen finished the game with a career-high-tying 21 points. It was her second-straight game of 21 and third this season. She connected on 7-of-8 shots and 7-of-10 free throw attempts. Urbanick hit 4-of-8 3-point attempts and tallied 16 points. Jackson was the third member in double figures, finishing with 11 points. She sank 3-of-7 triple shots. For the game, Detroit made 8-of-24 3-point attempts.
Haleigh Ristovski pulled down 10 rebounds and had a team-high five assists. Reynolds and sophomore
Chea Taylor each finished with seven points. Detroit improved to 11-2 when shooting 40 percent or better from the floor, sinking 44.8 percent of shots. Detroit had the advantage in rebounds, 37-35.
Indiya Benjamin and Kelsea Newman led YSU with 15 points each.
