Titans Roll to 16-6 Victory Over Stetson on Friday

DETROIT (4/15/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team earned its second Atlantic Sun win of the season on Friday afternoon, scoring seven of the first eight goals and rolling to a 16-6 triumph over visiting Stetson University from Titan Field.

Detroit improves to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Sun. Detroit has won seven of its last eight contests overall. Freshman Lexie Kinmond tallied a game-best six points while tying a season-best with five goals. Freshman Kaitlyn Wandelt added four goals for Detroit.

The Titans came out strong on both ends in the first half, scoring six markers and allowing Stetson to score just one goal in the first 30 minutes of the game. Neither team scored in the first nine minutes of the game, but Wandelt then scored twice on her own to give Detroit a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.

Sophomore Brianna Plester added the next off a feed from Kinmond and Kinmond followed with one of her own as the Titans went up 4-0 with 9:04 left in the first. The Titans scored two more goals in the first half, as Wandelt completed her sixth hat trick of the year with just 10 seconds remaining before the half.

Kinmond scored her third goal 50 seconds into the second half to give Detroit a 7-1 cushion. Following a pair of Stetson goals, the Titans countered with five straight as Detroit went up by a commanding 12-3 margin with 15:10 left. Sophomore Jordyn Beam started and finished the 5-0 run, while Wandelt, senior Michaela Schwartz and Kinmond all added goals.

Detroit completed the scoring with goals by Kinmond, senior Kylie Birney, and sophomores Jessica Snyder and Brittany Fenney. Birney, Plester and Snyder all finished with one goal and one assist, while Beam had two goals for the Titans.

The Titan defense held Stetson's top offensive duo of Hallie Merz and Lindsay Summers, who came into the game with 85 combined points, to a total of zero points and four turnovers on Friday.

Detroit also held a 17-6 advantage in draw controls, including 12-3 in the second half. Plester collected a team-high five draw controls, while Wandelt collected four draws for the Titans. Freshman Morgan Girardi, sophomore Emma Mucci and Kinmond all had two draw controls.

Goalkeeper Allison McDonough earned her seventh win of the season in net, turning away six shots for Detroit. She also led Detroit with four ground balls. Mucci added three ground balls while sophomore Lauren Webley had two ground balls.

Detroit held the shot advantage in the game, 33-21. The Titans had 24 shots on goal, while Stetson put 12 on net. Both teams were effective in clear situations as Detroit went 16-for-18 and the Hatters were 17-for-18.

• Wandelt is five draw controls (47) shy of the single-season school record of 52, set by Zaynib Hamze in 2013.
• Kinmond is the only Titan to score in every game this season. She has at least one goal and one assist in eight straight games.
• Wandelt has 19 goals in her past four games, with hat tricks coming in all four of them.
• The Titans are 6-0 all-time against Stetson, winning three of those meetings in the past two seasons.
• Detroit has allowed nine goals or fewer in seven of its past eight contests.
• UDM is 5-2 at home this season.

Detroit will return to the field for the second time in three days on Sunday, hosting Jacksonville from Titan Field as the Titans look for their second-straight win in Atlantic Sun play. Game time is set for 12 p.m. and is slated for an ESPN3 broadcast.
