ROCHESTER, Mich. (4/19/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team earned a series win on the road against rival Oakland University after a doubleheader split on Tuesday afternoon from the Oakland Softball Field.
After edging the Golden Grizzlies, 3-2, on Monday, the Titans brought out the artillery in Tuesday's opener and smacked four extra-base hits on their way to a 6-2 victory.
Oakland was able to spoil Detroit's attempt at a sweep with a 7-2 win in the series finale.
With the split, Detroit moves to 13-32 on the season and 5-10 in Horizon League play. The series win also gives the Titans two points in the Metro Series scoring system.
Game One: Detroit 6 – Oakland 2
Junior
Laura Villagrana went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, sparking Detroit to a 6-2 victory at Oakland in Tuesday's opener.
Senior
Christa McGahuey was sharp in the circle, holding the Golden Grizzlies to two hits over four innings of work. McGahuey picked up the win after allowing no runs, walking none and striking out five.
Mauser got the start in the circle and lasted three innings before being lifted for McGahuey. Mauser was exceptional early, but ran into trouble in the third. She limited the damage and finished with two runs allowed on two hits, a walk and four strikeouts.
The Titans rallied for three runs in both the third and fourth innings. Detroit picked up four hits in the top of the third, highlighted by RBI double by sophomore
Savvy Ferstle down the left field line.
Including Villagrana, seven Titans recorded hits in the game, three of which recorded multiple hits.
Junior
Cheyenne Willeford went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, run and RBI, while freshman
Kara Vitale was 2-for-2 with a run and a walk.
Villagrana,
Jordan Manno and
Katy Severson all recorded triples in the win, with Ferstle adding the Titans' fourth extra-base hit via a double in the third.
Game Two: Oakland 7 – Detroit 2
Looking to avoid a sweep, the Golden Grizzlies came out swinging and scored the first three runs of the game to lead 3-0 after two.
The Titans chipped away at the lead with a run in both the third and the fourth to get within one at 3-2, but Oakland pulled away with four late runs to pick up the victory.
Jennifer Cottle led off the third with a double and came around to score on a RBI groundout by Vitale, before Manno led off the fourth with a single and eventually found pay dirt on a RBI from Ferstle.
Junior
Keaira Schilling got the start in the circle and was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
Manno led the offense with a pair of hits and a run scored in three at-bats while Cottle was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored.
ON DECK
Detroit returns to Horizon League action this weekend at Valparaiso. The Titans and Crusaders begin the three-game series with a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday from the Hoosier State.
