DETROIT (4/30/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team had its senior day spoiled on Saturday after the visiting Cleveland State Vikings came into Buysse Ballpark and edged the Titans, 8-6.
Originally pegged as a doubleheader, the second game of the day was postponed to Sunday due to incoming rain. The two programs will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 12 p.m.
Before the game, Detroit honored its senior class of
Jennifer Cottle,
Christa McGahuey,
Katy Severson and
Samantha Wolschleger for their contributions to the University of Detroit Mercy and the softball program.
Detroit roared back from an early deficit and took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth after a four-run inning from the hosts. Cleveland State evened the game with a run in the fifth, before scoring two unearned runs in the sixth to sneak away with the victory.
The Vikings put Detroit in a hole early with a four-run first inning, but the Titans responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.
Cleveland State pushed its lead to three with a run in the third, before Detroit answered with a rally in the fourth. Severson led off the inning with a hit to right and Wolschleger put a pair on with a walk. Junior
Laura Villagrana smoked a ball off the glove of the third baseman and the ball caromed into the Detroit dugout to push a run across, before a RBI bunt single by
Cheyenne Willeford. A RBI single by
Jordan Manno and sacrifice fly by McGahuey capped Detroit's four-run outburst and gave the Titans a 6-5 lead.
The Vikings scratched a run across in the fifth to even the game at 6-6 and took advantage of a Titan error in the sixth to push two runs across with two outs in the sixth.
The Titans were in business with a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth, but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat as Cleveland State escaped with the win.
Manno led the offense from the three-spot in the order with three hits in three at-bats, with a run scored, RBI and a walk. Five other Titans picked up hits in the defeat.
Junior
Alexis Robison-Kohrs was tagged with the loss after allowing a pair of unearned runs in two innings of relief.
With the loss, Detroit falls to 17-34 on the season and 7-12 in Horizon League action. Meanwhile, Cleveland State improves to 16-28 overall and 9-10 in league play.
The Titans and Vikings resume the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., with game two following at approximately 2 p.m. from Buysse Ballpark.
