HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY. (4/9/16) – Junior
Alexis Robison-Kohrs fired a shutout to earn a doubleheader split for the University of Detroit Mercy softball team and a 2-1 series win against Northern Kentucky in the finale of a three-game Horizon League set on a windy Saturday afternoon from the Bluegrass State.
After earning a 3-0 win on Friday, the Titans bounced back from a 4-0 defeat in Saturday's opener to serve the Norse a 4-0 loss in the series finale.
Robison-Kohrs was brilliant, allowing six hits and recording six punch-outs over seven scoreless frames to pick up the win in game two.
The Titans jumped on the Norse early in the finale, with senior
Christa McGahuey going deep for a three-run blast in the top of the first. Robison-Kohrs shut down NKU from there and junior
Laura Villagrana delivered an insurance run on a RBI triple in the seventh.
Detroit outhit NKU 10-6 in the nightcap, led by multi-hit efforts from freshmen
Kara Vitale and
Jordan Manno. Vitale went 2-for-2 with a walk and Manno was 3-for-3.
McGahuey was 1-for-3 with a homer and three RBI, while Villagrana was 1-for-3 with a RBI triple and run scored.
Detroit fell in the opener despite out-hitting NKU 4-2 and receiving a solid outing from junior
Keaira Schilling.
Schilling worked around six walks to allow just two earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Robison-Kohrs tossed the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run to keep UDM in the game.
The Norse took advantage of a Detroit error in the fourth to break a scoreless affair and take a 1-0 lead, before again capitalizing on a Titan miscue in the fifth to push across three more runs.
Junior
Alyssa James went 2-for-3 from the plate with a stolen base to highlight the offensive output for the Titans in game one.
With the split, Detroit improved to 10-28 overall and 3-6 in HL play, while NKU moves to 9-27 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
