At No. 3 was one of the biggest upsets in Detroit Mercy men's soccer history as the Titans went on the road to Ann Arbor and defeated the Wolverines, 2-1, for the first win over the maize and blue in school history.
The Titans saw the Wolverines go on the attack often – highlighted by a 16-4 shot advantage in the contest - but the red, white and blue kept them off the scoreboard in the first half.
Detroit Mercy would take a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute as
Tyler Moorman took a pass from
Spiro Pliakos and buried it in the lower left and past the goalkeeper for the goal.
That was the Titans' only shot in the first 45 minutes as Michigan held a 6-1 shot margin, but goalkeeper
Nathan Steinwascher was up to the challenge posting a pair of saves in the first period and six for the game.
In the second half, the Titans extended their lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute as
Alex Mendonca perfectly set up classmate
Jason Leslie near the far post with a deep cross and he did the rest with a header to the corner of the goal that hit the crossbar and went over the goal line.
Steinwascher - the 2016 President's Award winner for the most outstanding senior student-athlete – and the defense then sealed the triumph with some great defense at the end of the game. Steinwascher made a great save in the box with just over one minute remaining as Michigan's Francis Atuahene was barreling in on goal. The Wolverines had one more look on goal in the final minute, but Detroit was able to clear the ball away several times and in the final 10 seconds kicked it away to clinch the victory.
