DETROIT (8/19/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Baylor University in the 2016 regular season and home opener Friday afternoon from Titan Field.
The visiting Bears, runners-up in the Big 12 Conference last fall, scored a goal in each frame to earn the win.
Lauren Piercy tracked down a headed pass from Ashley York and slipped a shot into net past a charging keeper to open scoring in the 12
th minute. Baylor added their second goal of the game in the 60
th minute, with York collecting her second assist of the afternoon on a headed goal by Lindsay Burns.
The Titan defense stood strong in front of net, forcing long shots from the Bears as junior
Marina Manzo racked up nine saves on the day. Manzo's nine saves was the second-highest total of her career and most since 2014.
Detroit Mercy got into a better rhythm in the second half, tallying all three of their shots and corner kicks in the stanza. Seniors
Anna Mindling and
Carley Rice each recorded a shot, with junior
Rachel DeLuca accounting for the Titans' third shot.
Overall, Baylor posted advantages in shots (19-3) and corner kicks (9-3), while the Titans held the edge in saves (9-0).
The match was the 2016 season opener for both sides.
The Titans return to action on the road next week in the Lone Star State. Detroit Mercy will square off with Sam Houston State on Aug. 26, before turning their attention to Texas on Aug. 28. Both games will be held at UT in Austin, Tex.
